Need dining room suggestions!

last month
last modified: last month

We are in the process of redoing our dining room (just had it painted white and added the new rug). The table and chairs were inherited, and although more traditional than my taste, beautiful. I want to make the room more interesting (my style tends to mix a little boho and contemporary combo) and am trying to decide on lighting and a sideboard. Maybe stick with black and white to match the rug? I'm totally open to adding some color (especially the sideboard piece) but I've looked and am just a tad stuck. Open to ideas! I also haven't hung any art up just yet so please know it's coming.

The room dimensions are 12x14

Love the dining set! - if it were me, I’d replace the mirror with some oversized art and the right chandelier will help define the space

a nice sideboard for the empty wall?

Wow I love the dining set it really ads caracter to the space! I like the idea of a black sideboard, maybe a mix of black and wood.

I would maybe get a bigger round mirror, oversized I feel like it would look really good!

Sounds like a beautiful starting point! Since you're aiming to bring in a bit of your boho-contemporary style, have you considered adding some art to the space? A large, bold piece or even a gallery wall with a mix of textures and frames could really bring in personality and balance the traditional furniture. You could even include some textile or woven pieces to tie in the boho vibe.

Sideboards are pretty personal but I’ve always like this one - I like the texture and that it’s not too slick - I’d be tempted to go with wood for the sideboard and then a pair of the Room & Board Serena lamps in black to tie into the rug

i like the long low profile - perfect service space or bar when entertaining

FWIW i’m always recommending the paper tapestries from Anthro - huge and a total steal

I like the suggested Room & Board sideboard (in black) and the Four Hands black sideboard for the long wall in the dining room with large great art over it.

For lighting, maybe one that picks up on the woven accents on your chairs and the Four Hands sideboard. I like these photos or the multi-arm one with mini woven shades suggested in another post.

What look are you going for? What colors do you like? The room is a blank slate right now, but you can do so much with it. I would like to see window treatments in addition to lighting and a sideboard. You need some softness which you could get with fabric at the windows.

Find a sideboard for the long wall. You can place art or a mirror above the sideboard. To get something long enough you might have to place multiple pieces together.

Thank you for the suggestions! I was thinking black sideboard so I’m glad you—the experts—support that!

On sideboard height: I feel like the height should be close to the table so it isnt dwarfed. Is that correct?

If I do a black sideboard, what color for lighting fixture over table? We added recessed, positionable, art lights for 3 walls (searching for art!) so we do have additional lighting — the fixture will not have to do all of the heavy lifting

IMO new chairs in a more modern look I wonder why a black rug I actaully do noytlike rugs in DRs and never choose that before having some kind of plan for the whole space . I would not have ablack buffet or sideboard with that table but I would not let that rug drive the bus. Can we see your art or is that still to be decided . I happen to collect original art so often it drives all my choices in a space . I think a to scale floor plan coulld be helpful since the pics are distorting the space IMO in one the space looks huge in the other very small.

I just added the room dimensions which are 12x14, and a photo of the rug which is black and white It’s new and I love it so I prefer to keep it Art is a work in progress!

Dining rooms need some softness, so a rug is a nice touch, along with window treatments.

That dining set is fabulous. That said, you have two wood finishes in play--rich gold wood of dining table/chairs, more modern lighter gold floor. If the rug is a keeper--it's great but not necessarily in harmony with the dining set or floor--then a black sideboard is what to look for. Was the rug chosen to go with art work you have or are you open to art suggestions or palette suggestions?

I think a linear fixture like this one would work well over the shape of your table and tie in well with the chairs. It is budget friendly too. Link provided https://amzn.to/3FOQKN9
