Ratgirls domain expired and every link i found with her name led to a weird place with no connection to the writer. it seemd her writing is archived at a university but theres no link to the articles.

i loved that ”blog” when I discovered it about 5 years ago.. It is still up but hasnt been added to in years.

it was already defunct by the time i discovered it.. i found references to some plants with very few references else where on the web. Her writing was excellent and she referenced a lot of very early sources.

i liked her classy layout and formatting as well.

what a difference from many of todays garden bloggers who use second and third hand sources and whose errors and incomplete information will live on for years.

i just looked at the website several days ago, hoping to find a web address so i could ask about more of her writing.

Good to meet another soul who knew of her.

The real shame is that any post older than about 12 years ago, had pictures posted with an external host, losing years (thousands) of pictures posted by some real experts (or fanatics).

Would be nice to be able to look back and see some of these stunning gardens/trees that were posted from the beginning. :-(

What I really liked about the old site was, if you did a search in the trees forum, the search would be conducted in 'Trees'. Or if you searched in the conifer forum, the search would be conducted in 'Conifers'. When I research, I want to search in the forum I am currently in.

In Houzz, anything you search for, has to be in 'Discussions' or 'Photos' or 'Shops'. Which isn't what us plant people want.

And what's weird, sometimes when I search, I sometimes get the prior way that I mentioned (search is done in the current forum) and sometimes it's the latter way I mentioned (search is done in 'Discussions' or 'Photos' or 'Shops').

Very frustrating!

I've had that same complaint. Someone else mentioned that if you sign into Gardenweb you can do a search the old way, if you sign into houzz you get the new way.

I go to gardenweb.com and click search, and this is what I get. YMMV

You need to search while in a given forum. While in Perennials in gardenweb I get this.

Yes tj, but things have changed. And if you have an older password and logged in to Gardenweb, then your address bar looks like below (note gardenweb in the address).

You don't always get the choice of the current forum (see below).

I'm like many that have been here a while now and have a Gardenweb login name.

Well, I just tried it to see if it works. I have an old Gardenweb log in. But it didn't make any difference. When I did a search the only option it offered was Discussions. I was logged in to Houzz, I logged out, and signed into Gardenweb and it was the same.

It works perfectly well for me. But then I am only logged into Garden Web - never Houzz - and Isearch in specific forums all the time. The only caveat is that you need to be in the forum the topic you are searching is likely to appear.

Okay, I tried it again. you were right, GGal. It did offer a search in Perennials forum when I was in Perennials forum. Right at the top before Discussions. The first time I tried it, I was expecting something else and not looking carefully enough. I was expecting when I searched for 'gardenweb' that it would come up in every forum it was in. That I would see a selection of results in different forums.

I'm sooo glad those old threads are still there and I hope they always are.

I've noticed if I click on a thread from gardenweb, it still says houzz in the address bar after it comes up and doesn't ask me to log in separately.

Yesterday I searched on google for how to grow cannas from seed because I saved a few from a canna that's doing well in my garden and I just thought it might be fun to see what I get. (I like surprises) : ) Well one of the results that came up on my search was MYSELF asking twenty years ago on Gardenweb how fast cannas grow from seed. lol

Interesting, on this Win10 box I'm still logged into gardenweb dot com. I tried getting into gardenweb while booted into Linux, but it wouldn't go there -- always going to houzz. But I really don't see any significant difference -- used to be you could still save posts' pics on gardenweb, but that eventually got stopped (but doing a screenshot is easy). Only thing I can think is I have a cookie(s) in the Win10 firefox files that enable me to still get on gardenweb.

I stay logged into gardenweb.com, I have no interest in anything on Houzz. All of the gardenweb forums are still there, except Hot Topics which was removed because it got too hot. Some of the forums may be dead, or nearly so, but there's a wealth of information still there.

Re: ”ratgirl”” did we deternine whether her photographs were accessable anywhere?

i went back and answered my own question. The link had the photos as well.

She was a prolific writer.and her photos were good. I spent a hour just going through the ” campanula”section. My attention span wavered before i could get through them all.

i hope some other people will find the website and enjoy a very original garden writer.
