A basket case

last modified: 29 days ago

Or the case of a basket.

When last we left our heroine, she was trying to decide if she should replace this sink skirt with a different look, or remove it. Over the years I have used this skirt, and also used it with the shelves open and a skirt just in the center.

FF 6 mo.s+ and I am playing with this anew. I recall someone suggested styling it with baskets. The bowls to the left and right on the top shelves always live there and are much used. The baskets are new. There is no basket on the bottom right just yet because it will have to be cutout to accommodate something there.

But my question is .... I like the quality and style of these baskets. The HG ones are all far too rustic IMHO. But, the one on the bottom left *just fits,* and I mean barely. Does that look odd to you? Before I commit basket-icide to make one fit the bottom right, I want to know if it looks ok to begin with,

(the curtain in the middle is another matter, for now my q is in re baskets.)

Looks too tall to me. Everything else has a little clearance which looks better I think. I like the open look better than the curtain.

I'm okay with the fit of the basket on the bottom left. Assuming it slides in and out without too much effort. Love the curtain in the middle!

Darn, how could i have forgotten! Anyone who submits comments that include discussion about function will get ten points off their grade

Seriously though, I will never use that space. I never have. It can be moved to allow the cleaning person to mop the floor tho.

I like the open look better than the curtain.

I go back and forth, so good to hear views on this.

I think the lower left basket needs a little breathing room - just a tiny bit. As it is now, I hear it scraping on the shelf above whenever it is moved. (The fact that it is never moved is beside the point. I hear it!)

The height doesnt bother me at all but the width does.

    I love that sink.

Honestly it looks fine to me.

I think it'd look better with a matching one on the right. What looks odd to me is the cannister on the floor, unless it's a trash can.

There will be a matching one on the bottom right (if Mtn decides to keep the one on the bottom left) - but it needs alterations.

I really don't care for the full sink skirt in the top photo and my reaction rather surprises me. But I think it's because it reminds me of hotel bedding. The one in the second photo is charming and looks like it belongs there.

I am putting a matching one on the right, the question is about the tight fit, not whether to match.

I have used the mini trashcan for compost at times, but I don't anymore.

    needs a little breathing room

Yeah, in a perfect world i'd agree. But if I do that, all 4 baskets have to go. As it is they all match. They are not available in infinite increments of height of course, so I have to decide if it is worth to try to find sets of baskets that fit better. No dice at HG or any place that has baskets in person. Ordering baskets and shipping back and forth is uber wasteful too.

PS these baskets are quite nice, btw. Amazon. ( i am not using the lids

If it's a big PITA to find the right baskets, as it seems to be, then I'd say the one on the lower left is fine especially if you're going to have one like it on the lower right. If it's in line with its mate on the right then I don't think it would bother me that it's not aligned the same as the two above it.

Yes, that is the plan. But before I take a $99 basket and cut it up and turn it into a prop, I wanted opinions on how it looked.

This is the plan. In a perfect world, the bottom basket would be an inch or two shorter.

Or, I could use the smaller baskets in all four spots. The one on the bottom I would use with the lid so you aren't peering in.

I guess I could add a shelf to keep the bottom one off the floor? But it could never match the one above (which is fixed and integrated).

OOh.. maybe I could put the bottom ones on little brass wheels, and it might even raise it high enough to clear the thing on the bottom right.

I like the entire sink covered with a skirt much better. The whole set up looks skimpy without it. If you go without a big skirt, I'd stick to much smaller items than those four baskets. They also feel so incongruent to me because they have a very new Home Goods vibe and your sink has so much great vintage charm.

I do not like the full skirt at all.

I like it with the baskets, and as long as the baskets can actually be moved in and out without a fight, I'd get the match to the big'un bottom left, to match bottom right.

I get form over function but I had to really chuckle about adding a shelf and or adding wheels to make it work.

I think it looks lovely as you show it, and adding the bottom right big basket.

Y’all pardon my language but I’m going to use the F word. Would it function better to have your carpenter build something the same height and depth as the wooden box that is there to fill the void to the left of it, making a complete platform. Then do the same on the left side. Set the smaller baskets on the platform. Maybe paint the front edge of the platform black so that it recedes. (My ”photoshopping without photoshop” skills leave a lot to be desired)

I think brass wheels are going to be a PITA. They’ll always be catching on something or rolling in the wrong direction or falling off. I don’t think they would be very functional. There I go using the F word again. Mea culpa!

P.S. What is that box? Is it plumbing access? Can you re-build the entire plumbing system in the house to do away with it so your baskets fit nicer? jk

As I understand it, the baskets are just for show, so it doesn’t much matter how easy they are to move, roll, etc.

The floor looks great! can we see more?

Lol i have no idea what it is!

Honestly i am not ever using that space. Never have. Especially now w: the K, a K closet, a butlers pantry and my 10x8 pantry annex, i have more storage than i actually need . Esp storage so out of the way

im leaning toward smaller baskets, lidded, raised off the floor somehow

As far as baskets, i have many, many of them throughout my k and house and to me, they are very much vintage. What i dont care for on display are the junky looking ”water hyacinth” ones from HG.

lol the ”f” word… you guys just cant have a convo without dropping the f bomb, no matter how many times i scold you

They are for show everyone! Hiring a carpenter to add a shelf $. I would try the smaller baskets with lid and casters to give height, unattached at first and see how you like the fit. I really like the look with the baskets instead of the full curtain on the sink cabinet. It’s such a great look. Go with your gut! You have great taste.

, i have more storage than i actually need .

LOL maybe I should store sheets there!

Sue, Thanks! My whole house is still in disarray, even after a team of 2 housecleaners spent 2 days here putting stuff away for us. It really is akin to a whole house move. I will post more when I am in array.

I like the entire sink covered with a skirt much better.

My initial concept was always a full skirt. When I had my carpenter build a base for the sink, he suggested shelves and it's a good thing because now I have options.

would try the smaller baskets with lid and casters to give height,

That is currently my fave option; we shall see.

I think the big baskets look squished. Sorry.

I would close inthe bottom of the cabinet with molding and add a floor to elevate, paint it all to match the sink cabinet.

Ironically I am also on a basket quest today.

I'm on board with your current plan - smaller baskets raised with lids. Love the new floor by the way.

If I wasn't using them for anything I would just have false fronts made for at least the bottom four that just attached with magnets or something.

Where do you put the towel for that sink?

I may have missed it upthread, but what's behind the curtain in the middle?

    pal that looks great.

I really like that! It repeats the cabinets to the right! You could use them for dish cloths, soap, or whatever.

its be a huge project to add functional drawers, and not worth it given that its not needed. This is a secondary sink only used occasionally. We have three sinks

Four of the smaller baskets, (on lifts for the ones on the floor, maybe just little 2" wooden feet),

then an aqua and white gingham curtain for the center, and gingham basket liners (elasticised styke instead of 4 twee little bows), with only about an inch of gingham rim on the baskets. The wooden feet could be distressed to echo the adjoining table. Custom elasticised liners are inexpensive (Amish or etsy). As for the suggested gingham, I'd consider larger than the usual quarter inch size since the visual is somewhat remote there. Buffalo check might be too big, you'd have to try it in situ.

I would just make false fronts.

    last modified: 29 days ago

    or paint the baskets white

False fronts that align perfectly and dont keep going askew is only a slightly less huge project

Not sure why they would go askew?

if someone bumps into them while at the sink etc.

Painting the baskets is possible but the natural color picks up the color of the table and my lone (original, floor to ceiling , glass front) cabinet

That makes sense. Just hurry and get that basket on the bottom!
