Help! Rug Dilemma

last modified: 22 days ago

I’m looking for a replacement rug for the navy floral one you see in the top picture and would love your suggestions! The choices are overwhelming. I love the one in the picture, but unfortunately our animals did not & totally destroyed it.

We have a natural woven shade on the windows & this room opens to our entryway (pictured) with black & white floral wallpaper.

The cats use looped rugs as a scratching post, so I want to stay away from that style.

I love the whimsy of the bottom rug I pictured - would appreciate feedback if you think it works in the space (review pictures of the rug make it appear darker, which I much prefer).

I'm also hoping to purchase a coffee table. I'd appreciate suggestions for that as well!

Thank you, thank you for your help!

Since you have animals, perhaps you should consider rugs that can be machine washed?????

Based on the one photo, I think your room rug is sized incorrectly and perhaps placed incorrectly. This rug should be closer to 8 x 10 if room permits.

I requested “machine washable” on Wayfair and did a split screen. You can browse all the websites this way.

Here are some I found. Tons more available.

What about trying a rug with more texture that has a little bit of a pattern but not an overwhelming one? Below are just a few visual suggestions from a few of the designs we have completed for clients.

The first thought I had was that your current rug is a bit small for your room. Whatever rug you decide to purchase should be larger than your current one.

The one that you've posted above, looks like it's already a bit "dingy" in the second photo. I assume that's because the rug has some gray blended in with the cream (although it doesn't seem to in the manufacturer's photo posted first).

Do you need to have washable rugs? I have two dogs - and I don't have washable rugs (my dogs are 10 lbs and 3 lbs + completely house broken since they were little pups).

I don't have cats (never have had one) - so, I'm not sure what types of rugs you need to avoid (other than looped) re: scratching.

I like the second one posted by Red Ryder - I like that it's lighter + it has nice colors for your room.

I want to acknowledge that you have great taste and a beautiful home!
    Trust your gut!!

If you feel like you like the whimsy rig, go for it. I think it can work..

Thank you everyone who took the time to answer! I agree we need a bigger rug - the navy one was purchased for another home with different furniture.

Still on the hunt for a rug & coffee table that will work in the space. A rug that is soft but not looped and adds a bit of whimsy without being too much! 😅

@freedomplace1, what a fun rug! Thank you! Our kitchen cabinets, also off this room, are a deep green & won't quite work with the rug, but this is close! I wish it came in different colors. Thank you for sending!

I think you can use the light green Anthropologie rug that you like. I would just suggest adding a throw in a deeper green color - which would complement the rug - and would also help to give the rug more presence against your leather pieces.

    General idea:

I think you fell in love with the whimsical because your feeling a need for some color and fun in your home.

Your home is lovely, but it is very conservative. I think we all want to grow up and have a sophisticated home when we are young, and then we miss being young.

I like the idea of adding some whimsy. You would need to lighten and brighten the decor, and it may be easier to go with something a bit more subdued, but why - have fun!

If the one you picked feels a bit too light and bright for your comfort, go with something like this and still redo the decor. Fewer, bigger, more interesting and colorful pieces.

This is how my mom decorated her shelves - sorry it is a Christmas photo, but what I had handy. Every piece has space to stand on it's own. Every piece had meaning. A gift, something purchased while traveling, something that belonged to her mother.
