In Between Storms

We are breaking all kinds of records with our rain fall this year. It's a muddy mess out there. Now that it's mid June however, I'm almost afraid to wish it would stop - because it might altogether.

Here's a few that bloomed in between showers:

Orange Smoothie. Such a performer for me. So many blooms:

Zac Attack. Not very vigorous. Have had it for a few years now and still 2 fans. This is how the color purple usually looks in my climate:

Abstract Orange: A Salter sev so it's tender without being garaged over winter:

Little Dream Caster: Small flowers on a small plant. The picotee edge adds to it's charm. Needs TLC or it can get over whelmed by it's larger relatives. Very Sweet in a pot:

Speaking of small flowers, this is a larger "small" flower then Little Dream Caster and it has astounded me this year with how prolific it has been. Multiple blooms at a time, perfect form, several instant reblooms, and a taller plant then many small ones I've tried.

Itty Bitty Kitty:

Two year old plant finally pumped out 4 buds this year. A Pierce dormant that I hope picks up the pace this year.

MCJagger:

MCJagger has an attractive bloom. My experience with most Pierces is that they didn't do well in pots and had low bud count in them. Orange Smoothie has a happy face.

I always admire Orange smoothie when you post it. McJagger is pretty, I saw it in person somewhere recently, can't remember where right off, beautiful bloom. Theirs was in ground, but not a lot of blooms it looked, but also seemed fairly new. I have not been impressed with Pierce's plants that I have, not as tall or as prolific, but I realize his gardens are not like my weedy mess, LOL. Hope yours improves, it really is a pretty flower. Little Dream Catcher is verry pretty. I have some smaller plants that get quickly overwhelmped by taller more vigorous foliaged plants, am constantly having to move something. And what to do when I have a tall plant with small foliage, planted right in the middle of other tall but more aggressive foliage? Itty bitty Kitty is my favorite of these! I don't have a lot of small flowered plants, the bigger and gaudier they are, the better I like!

Nancy: I agree with you about small flowered daylilies. They have to have a little bit of something special (to my eye) to stay with me. Interesting report on McJagger in someone else's garden. thanks for passing your experience on.........Debra: I haven't done that many Pierce's before because of my pot system and their origin. My favorite was When Royals Dream. I tried it 3 times and couldn't get it to survive.........Kate: The reason I tried Itty Bitty Kitty was first and foremost because of the name, and second because of the "bagel" style blooms. I always wanted to try the bagel form, but most of the ones I investigated weren't stable. I've never seen any variance in form on this plant in two years. Always bagel. And btw, we are now experiencing our second storm of the day. My toes are webbing..................Maryl

Wow, you have quite a grouping of eye candy. The green throats really stand out. Are these all in pots or in the ground? We too have had an abundance of rain this season but I won't complain as the alterntive would create hardships for the gardens.

Thanks Julia. With all this rain and cooler weather the greens are shinning. Tomorrow though we are finally going into summer weather with the heat index soaring because of all the wet ground. 100 degrees plus. ICK!.............Maryl

Abstract Orange is my fave. I see it's a fairly recent Salter.

Abstract Orange is a pretty one. I like the color of Zoe Attack, and I just really like MCJagger.

Mantis: I like quite a few of Salter's introductions. The colors are usually good in my climate. However, they don't appreciate my pot system so not many linger for long. Abstract Orange is on its 2nd attempt here to keep it going. It's not been a vigorous grower for me...........Thanks Kay. We will see if McJagger justifies it's pampering in the future. So far two years for 4 blooms does not impress me...........Maryl

Itty Bitty Kitty is quite cute. I like the color of Zac Attack; too bad it isn't more vigorous. I have a couple like that but I keep them because I really like them.

Brad: There are always a few, even in my small collection that, like you, I don't want to part with. I think Zac Attack may do better in a warmer winter climate and in the ground, but so far I can't part with it to see. We all have those.............Maryl
