Hard to give planting advice when we don’t know if you live where palm trees or polar bears grow.

You mean the WHOLE area pictured, all along the house? We can’t tell if there are doors to the house that you need to allow access for across this area. It looks like the picture was taken from inside the house looking out a window - is that correct? Is that a deck or patio on the left which needs an access somewhere from this area?

Are you thinking of laying mulch or gravel or concrete? Or just planting something?

Along with zone and nearest city, you need to let us know whether you want grass or a groundcover and something else in the planting box, or if the planting box is a leftover from a former owner that you could take or leave. Does the area include a path between a door? Or could you fill the entire space with shrubs? Is it visible from a window where you often are, so you want it to look great most of the year? Or is it not an important view, but a bit sorry-looking and you want to fix that?

As well as all the other considerations mentioned above, I'd want something to screen the neighbour's house - a small tree or trees/shrubs maybe even a feature at the end to make a vista eg obelisk, bird bath or large container. Maybe even a seat and/or arbour.

I'd remove the egregious planting box and either have a border down each side or no beds at all. This could be a very attractive space to see from the window and to use.

Strawberry ground cover or ornamental strawberry comes in pink or white flowers and very pretty and hardy. Stepping stones are a nice feature. Your local nursery will have varieties that grow in your area.
