kitchen ceiling lighting

Hi everyone! I found myself renovating a kitchen, and have no idea what to do about lighting. I know there will be a pendant of some sort over the kitchen sink and probably two over the island, but what about the rest? I’ve got two photos here from after demo, and the other two are before demo, but show the basic layout of where the cabinets will be. Except the refrigerator will be further along the wall instead of that little white cabinet.

The contractor said to add recessed lights Instead of the two main lights that are already there. As you can see the kitchen is sort of in two sections, the main kitchen and a transition area that access the hallway between the dining room and the foyer, with the laundry room/closet off to the side. Does recessed lighting at value to a house? And if this is a good idea, how many would you put? And in what pattern? Thank you for all the inspiration!

Definitely add recessed lights while you have an electrician working at the house. I would add at least 6 of them. Go with 4" cans.

I don't think you have room for an island with your kitchen width ...

Lighting is layered in good designs, task, ambient and decorative. Task lights the work zones with 450 lumens at the counter or 70-80 footcandles. 4" led cans 3-6" in from the edge of the counter. With two offset to either side of where you stand to prep or use the sink. This eliminates shadowing from your body. Shoulb be on dimmers. Undercab led strip lighting can contribute. Ambient uses flood led bulbs for lighting the space as a whole. Decorative is not a big factor in light level. Leds come in different color temperatures of white. 3500K is common. The color you choose affects how the color of everything from floors, cabinets and counters appear.

Pot lights easily done with a decent electrician do all 4" pots LED bulbs and IMO never too much lighting in a kitchen From what I can see of the plan there are some issues . Start by getting a counter depth fridge and and no peninsula or at least much smaller one . All the base cabinets need to be drawers . If you want real help here you need to post a to scale floor plan showing all measurements clearly marked and where all doorways lead .INclide the whole space including the laundry and what look to be a pantry cabinet beside the door with the bag on it.

Use these remodeling housing downlight units recessed in the ceiling of your kitchen.

Thank you all. Yes, there is a counter depth fridge and it is moving down the wall towards the door ( away from the pantry). yes that is a pantry next to the door with a bag on it. all those cabinets have been ripped out and new ones (with drawers) ordered, but the floor plan is basically the same which is the only reason I included the old pictures. The Peninsula is what I meant by an island.

But it seems everyone is in agreement on the recessed lighting! And knowing they should be 4 inch is helpful, as is the suggestion about one on each side of the sink to minimize shadowing and how far from the upper cabinets they should come in. Thank you!

Have you also thought about under-cabinet lighting?

Here your lighting layout is based on your floor plan. You designate locations based on cabinetry, counters, appliances, windows, walls, and circulation. So until then you can't determine how many and where. Also here the kitchen lighting should include/consider the 6' space in front of the Laundry/french door, the hallway, and Laundry closet.
