Are you able to match the wood floors in the adjoining rooms? That would be my choice. My hardwood runs through my foyer to my front door - and still looks great after 25 years (I also have them through my kitchen). I am getting ready to refinish my wood floors - but not because of any damage. It's just time.

It is a great looking floor. if mine, I would paint the walls a light creamy greige, replace the ceiling fixture, new artwork and replace the rug with a rectangle.

Suggest luxury vinyl tiles in a natural stone look and also works with the carpet. I think its feel will provide a seamless transition to other rooms, while feeling inviting and updated.

If possible, suggest painting the foyer a warm, neutral to lighten the space (only select a color after flooring is installed and have tested a few). Instead of a round mat, consider a runner (safer/nicer) with similar (but muted) shades to create a connection with the living room.

Other ideas, as I find there is usually a trigger effect. At some point consider painting the inside/outside of your door a softer shade and update the light. Look to connect everything, no matter what you decide to do.

Many thanks to all responders for your thoughtful messages. I am proceeding with a natural looking stone tile in a soft beige color that goes with the walls that were recently painted. I hope to post an after picture when completed if I remember to do so.

Sorry that choice will be a nightmare for those that come after or if you choose to swap it out...tile is not easy to be rid of.

Slate is often a good choice in an entry. Your current tiles seem too light for the foyer and the yellow gold walls don't seem to work with anything so I'd advise you repaint the foyer.

It appears to be a traditional style home and I'm not sure how the fireplace stone selection fits with anything in the home.

A classic approach to your foyer would be some type of two color square tile/stone flooring

Flooring on the diagonal would make the space appear larger.

Just had a nightmare fir my floor instalatiom by hiring National floor direct. another bad business if contractors.

New floor has been chosen and installed. (The dog is just a short term visitor.)

I know that the coloration in these photos is a little off but I think I achieved

my goal of keeping the foyer light so that it can withstand the winter darkness.

Front door is white when closed as it will be when the winter arrives.

Would you consider thin brick veneer? From what I can see of the wood flooring in your photos the warm tones of brick veneer would probably coordinate well with your wood flooring.

Too late to consider the brick veneer option. My new floor has already been installed with Core luxury vinyl tiles. I am satisfied with my foyer being different from the two adjoining rooms which feature hard wood flooring. I thank you for your comment/suggestion though.

I really like your existing tile. If it's in good condition, I would change the transition strip to black or silver instead of that gold color and keep the tile!

Unsolicited opinion: I do not think your area rug looks good with your nice living room. I think you should look for something with a pattern rather than the cold industrial mat that appears to be made from.

Nova- Its too late to go back to my former tile- it was many years old and had "dimples" which collected dirt that was hard to scrub out and had a few knicks and scratches.

As for my family room rug- it really isn't flat, industrial material though it looks that way in the picture and to your astute eye. And while it's not the softest feel underfoot, it has texture and "ridges" and "bumps". My family room is such an irregular size, shape and configuration that finding a workable sized rug was an endeavor. I have to have it centered on the fireplace rather than accommodating the seating area of the couch and 2 chairs. The only option that remains is getting a much larger rug but then the areas near the entrance to the foyer and kitchen are problematic. But thank you -I love unsolicited opinions too.
