Please Help - Window and Door Replacement for 1950’s home

I am replacing my windows, door and sidelights. I cannot decide between black or white windows. I would love to reduce the number of grills, however, I am not sure if this will be aesthetically pleasing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

White windows, eliminate the divider at the angle bay and no shutters anywhere.

No shutters and IMO not grids either I think they can be a mess on many houses . Maybe something more simple like this .

I like the simplicity of this.

Thank you so much. This may have changed my original plan! Now, would you recommend a black window or white?

    White

White windows and I prefer the grids like you have. It fits your style of house.

I like to understand the purpose of things as part of my decision making process.

Shutters - Originally (predate glass), shutters were how you kept intruders, animals . . . from coming in your home when you were not there or at night when you were sleeping and to warm or cool the house and protect the inhabitants from harsh weather conditions.

Working shutters today protect the glass from flying debris during hurricanes and tornados.

Not necessary unless you live in an area prone to hurricanes or tornados.

Grills - Panes - When we first started producing glass it was expensive to produce and transport large flat pieces of glass, so windows were built with small individual panes of glass.

So grills are absolutely not necessary today. It is just something we hung onto because it was what we were used to seeing.

2700 k lighting was the norm, not because they couldn't produce whiter light, but because people were used to gas lamps that lit your home in very yellow light.

Since these serve no purpose, add to things I have to maintain and for me (personal preference) don't add any aesthetic value, the answer would be - get rid of the shutters and get rid of the grills, have great, unobstructed views and light flowing in without creating a cubed pattern inside my home.

Very informative. Thank you. My concern is that the house may look too plain if you take away the shutters (which I don’t love) and the grills (I would never add these to a new build). It would nice to have an unobstructed view.

You have a very nice period home. White windows are best with your siding and roof. If you still want shutters make them functional. Especially those on second floor. That would add cost so keep that in mind. You can order windows with the mullions in between the two panes of thermopane glass. Keeps the look but makes window cleaning much easier! Lovely yard too!

I just did this using excel - not the best photoshop tool, but should give a decent idea of what it will look like without grills or shutters.

I really like that! Thank you Jennifer for taking the time to do this!!

If I felt like it was a bit boring I would change the front door color and maybe add some color above the door and the bay window.

I think the only place I would do no grids is the sidelights for the front door.

I would skip the shutters because of the paired windows.

But I think it's a very charming 1950s colonial revival house, and personally I think it gets awfully dull with no muntins in any of the windows.

To me it loses a lot of charm and looks like (especially if it didn't have the bay which is awesome), some houses they built not far from me for low income buyers. I live in a Colonial/early 19th c. city, and much of the 20th c. inexpensive infill housing they built was "colonial" style without most of the actual details. They aren't ugly, they just look low budget and unfinished.

I'd go with white and 4 over 4 or 2 over 2. I love your path. Very cool.

    Hi Sigrid,
Thank you for your comment. Can you explain to me what you mean by 4/4 or 2/2?

Thank you palimpsest. I agree with you 100% I plan on using the mountains that are not inside the glass, but Moore resembled the original window. I think it does add a lot of character. I also agree with you on the sidelines. I think they are a bit busy so it would be nice to have solid glass there.
