I know these pictures aren't the best lol but all I could find remaining of it. The first 3 pictures were the color of the bloom after a few days, when they first opened they were much brighter like the last picture

That's my guess too, Carol. Hope Soh elaborates. Surprisingly, I recently learned that Fragrant Cloud (Tantau, 1963), received an ADR in 1964, it's been put on my short list for a tall, back of bed bush replacement. Looks like it may be called up soon because one of my Moonlight Romantica bushes may be succumbing to a stem girdler or borer.

I don't remember if it was fragrant but looking at pictures of fragrant cloud, it looks like a good possibility it might be the one.

How tall was it, and where do you garden? location helps determine lots in an investigation. Why is it no longer?

It was about 2 and half feet tall at it's highest... The plant struggled a lot from the moment we planted it, I kept it around cause the color of the blooms were my personal favorite. It made it about 3 years, was starting to thrive and then it got destroyed by canker few years back and never got back to form, finally gave out over the winter. Largely my fault on the canker,I had some bad gardening habits with deadheading that I've since remedied and am trying to bring this one back. I'm in NC near Charlotte.

Looks much more like Tropicana than Fragrant Cloud to me.

Fragrant Cloud is one of my all time favorites, there is no more productive , fast repeating, and fragrant variety. However, she is very susceptible to blackspot. Amazing that she was awarded an ADR, the standards must have been very different 60 years ago! She’s also relatively short ,so could only be background for minis.

Agree that it doesn't look like Fragrant Cloud. Fragrant Cloud is an orange that has quite a lot of red in it. Ben's suggestion of Tropicana makes sense since that's often a rose you see at big box stores.

Soh, there are so many wonderful orange roses available these days, so if you aren't wedded to an exact match, maybe browse for what else is out there.

I actually have the Tropicana rose as well and can confirm it's not that one. Looking online fragrant cloud seems to check the most boxes once it was mentioned. The plant was short, struggled with black spot at times. Bright red orange is probably the best description for the flowers when they first opened, my initial description was pretty poor, my apologies.

Will try to find a similar colored rose thats more disease resistant if I can

not sure if Vulcano is available anywhere but it us blackspot free here zone7b north alabama. Our climate is almost identical to North Carolina. Orange redish hard to describe, no scent. ADR 2020.

I agree that the OP's pictures aren't Fragrant Cloud. My FCs have never ever been that pure orange, even when fully open.

Thank you Diane and Carol. I actually bought Vulcano as a consolation price from Palatine one year where all the pinks were sold out before I logged in and it turned out to be amazing.

After looking around some more, does the Dolly Parton possibly make sense? Seems like a type that's found in big box stores and has more of a bright red orange look than the fragrant cloud. Although that's just from online pictures

I'm wondering if you might have something like Vavoom? It's really solid orange, a floribunda. I grew it for a few years because I'm an orange rose addict (!) and it had one of the worst growth habits ever, so I ditched it. But the blooms were that solid cantaloupe orange. Seems like something that might turn up at a big box store. Might be worth a look at HMF :-D

Looking at the Dolly Parton there definitely seems to be a darker hue and not as bright. The vavoom looks to be a bit too orange, as mine was a bright red orange that would fade to a salmon color. The blooms lasted forever, several weeks. But even then, I would deadhead them because they were becoming ugly to look at, but none of the petals had even started to fall off.

Somewhat related, but after messing around with Gemini AI today, is it possible the Tropicana I received from Lowe's was mislabeled? I've written off the possibility of my previous one being this, as the blooms are nowhere near the bright Orange-red and look to be more pink. Gemini suggested that both are possibly Tropicana but that difference in variance seems pretty stark especially since the new Tropicana is growing in the same spot that my old one was .

My Tropicana is like this, a very hot orange, then fades to orange pink, no soft pastel tones.

Reviving my own old thread but with the help of Claude I may have found a possible match. An old rose named 'Prominent' seems to be a very close if not exact match for my old one. Does anyone here grow one of these that can share some pictures and also know where I might be able to find one? I saw rogue valley farm but they're out of stock and not sure when they'll have them again
