You will never cancel the red out of red oak. A mixed floor will also always be a variegated floor. You would need to water pop and go dark to get something that blends the differences better.

@Minardi do you have a recommendation for a light/medium stain color that would compliment the existing finishes?

You don't choose a light stain for that mixed wood situation, unless you are OK with the multi color look. Like a busy hickory floor. It has it's charms, but you have to want those charms.

Wood is warm and even white oak has red and yellow tones. My recommendation would be either Provincial or Special Walnut. Both are medium neutral brown stains.

@Diana Bier Interiors, LLC, thank you! i have also been thinking about Special walnut but worry it moght be too dark. What is your thoughts on mixing it with Classic Gray?

I've never mixed it, but you could try it on a small area. I like it just the way it is.

I was just looking at stains yesterday for our floors. One room is all white oak, and the other room is a mixture of red oak, hickory and pecan. My goal is to cut some of the yellow and red without going gray or being a mismatch with the cedar walls. Anyway, here are some pictures that you might find helpful. I think it's going to be essential for you to look at samples. I ended up deciding on a blend of two colors.

Top left is Weathered Oak. Top right is Neutral. Bottom right is 1/2 and 1/2. Bottom left is what I decided to go with -- 3 parts Weathered Oak to 1 part Neutral. I feel like that cuts the red/yellow without being white or gray.

Here's the color in another room. The small patch on the left is the mix, then Weathered Oak, then Neutral. We'll be painting this paneling an olive green.

@stiley thanlk you for your input and photos. I will, of course, have stain samples applied to the floors but i just wanted to give the contractor some ideas of what i want sampled.

So, how do you feel about the paneling? I removed paneling from my sun room and i was shocked by how dark those walls really were. Drywall on the walls and ceilings might really elevate those spaces. Clearly you love wood, but if there is a lot of it in the space.

@eam44 if you're talking to me, yes, it is a lot of wood! Like I said, we'll be painting the paneling a shade of green. This is a second home on a lake so I'm willing to leave more wood than I might in our primary home. We call these bedrooms the "cedar wing." I'm going to decorate with summer camp vibes, lots of pattern and comfy furniture with touches of modern and MCM.

The OP's room will look much brighter than the bedrooms I shared; I just wanted to show her the stains because the floors are similar.
