Our next get-together?

Michael Jordan’s house

Does it come with staff? Maintenance and security has been living on-site for years.

Is it funny I thought the same thing when I saw it? 😂

    The article about it

    One week minimum, $100,000.

That pond they talk about abuts a freight track, high-tension power lines, and a highway. But there’s a hardware store on the corner if you need earplugs.

It looks like a community college, but with less charm.

It's pretty much impossible to build in the "contemporary" vocabulary at this scale without it looking commercial. There are some luxurious materials but not nearly enough for 50,000+ square feet. It's too much drywall and much too empty.

This is roughly the size of Castle Hill in Ipswich Massachusetts (1924), which is a fully appointed Colonial Revival house. If they could likewise spend several tens of millions of dollars in interior detailing, art and better contemporary furniture, the Jordan house might be okay, because it's relatively inoffensive as far as houses like that go, with the exception of some rooms.

That house was a part time residence after MJ and Juanita divorced sometime in the mid 90s, basically not lived in at all by the early 2000s, and went on the market initially in 2006. It ended up selling for a fraction of the asking over a decade later. The entry gates were a common photo op location. Once in a blue moon you could run into him in town at the local grocery store or what was once a chi-chi denim store before he moved back to NC permanently. (no I did not follow him from there to here!) Even it its heyday it was not a warm fuzzy but that was never the point.

DH had a driver who had been on staff at the house while it was on the market. or so he said. It really was a full-time job to keep an empty house going. (I certainly found that out when my parents went into skilled care, and it wasn’t nearly that scale.)

This is actually not an uncommon sort of design in suburban Chicago in the gigantic house market.

    Does it come with staff?

"Tenant pays an additional $30,000 for the following utilities and services: lawncare, electric, water, gas, security, putting green, trees, pool, house cleaning, cable, aquarium, insurance, trash, pond maintenance. 30 day minimum rental, 60 day option available." This listing (I wanted to see interior) says $150,000 a month. Started out asking 29M in 2012. Sold for 9.5 in 2024.

I object. Our next GTG will be At Longwood Gardens. I’m looking forward to it.
