Some Firsts and Lasts

I have some with their first flowers open today, and others with their last blooms. I am definitely past peak today. I'm sure in future years, the peak will be a bit later.

Doctor Handsome had its ffo today. It's an EM, so I don't know why it waited so long to bloom. It was one of the last to come up this Spring.

Conspiracy Theory ffo - There's nothing special looking about this yellow bloom, but the plant habit is spectacular - five-way branching on the best scape with at least 25 buds. I think that will likely be the highest bud count in my garden.

Divas in Diamonds had its ffo about three days ago. I was waiting to get a better photo, but so far haven't been able to do so.

Miss Demeanor ffo - Somehow mine got left behind even though I dug it. This is a replacement I bought just now blooming in its pot.

All American Chief with a poly on its last flower.

Midnight Castle with its last bloom.

Pink Aloha X Bubblegum Queen duo

Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha #4

(Insider Trader X The Ultimate Sacrifice) X (Red Edition X The Ultimate Sacrifice)\

Armed to the Teeth

Grandma's Smile X Dearest Valentine - The best scape has more than 20 buds now. Unfortunately something has destroyed all of the buds on two scapes. Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha 4 is in the background.

As always, it's your pink seedlings that make my heart flutter. Both the Pink Aloha and Grandma's Smile seedlings are just the shade of pink I like best. What's your favorite pink to breed with to attain that color?...I've like American Chief too. The large yellow center is a winner for me on reds..........Maryl

Conspiracy Theory is a keeper to me because of its habits. I dont mind the plain yellow bloom on a bloom machine. It is so hard to pick favorites of your pink seedlings……the Judys Jewel seedling got me today, such a lovely photo.

Armed to the Teeth is a Polston. Does it have decent height? I know that Nan has often expressed disappointment in Polstons. I thought you were disappointed in the height of Miss Demeanor. Now you got another one. I am not a big fan of Doctor Handsome. It is a parent of Judy's namesake, Judy Davisson.

Mantis - Miss Demeanor was never as tall as registered. It was tall some years, and short others, and a combination of heights some years. It depended on how much the grubs ate the roots. I did like the blooms, and it always rebloomed in Nashville. The two Davissons that were always much, much shorter than registered were Reckless Girls and High Water Mark, both of which I brought with me. I'm hoping the grubs aren't as bad here as they were in Nashville. Armed to the Teeth was never the registered height of 30 inches in Nashville. It was usually about 26 inches tall. Here, planted in late October and in a drought, it's only about 22 inches tall. What do you expect? Eighty percent of my daylilies are short this year. I expected it since there wasn't time for the roots to grow. Why are you not a fan of Doctor Handsome?

What a great photo of Armed to the Teeth! So pretty. The pink seedlings are always so lovely and the Judy’s Jewel seedling has wonderful color.

Oh, maybe if the Doctor is at clump strength it will appeal to me more, but it isn't a really vibrant orange and hasn't held well in heat.

Mantis - I like the pinkish orange color of Doctor Handsome. I did notice it had faded quite a bit yesterday by noon.

All American Chief would be my pick. Your seedling pics do not disappoint. Lovely group.

Edit: Would love to see your new garden layout.

Julia - My garden layout is nothing exciting - just four rows (two rows a path and two more) planted as fast as I could dig out the dead tree roots. Here's a photo of part of it from June 29 when it started to peak.

The nice thing about daylilies is there is a color and plant habit for everyone, LOL!. I like Dr Handsome because it is not a bright orange. At one time orange did not appeal to me at all, but my tastes have changed over the years. I don't mind it even after it fades in the heat, and it does. I don't have Miss Demeanor, and for some reason that one does not appeal to me as much. I counted yesterday and I have at least 25 Davisson daylilies. Getting where too many similar looking ones, but such good plants. Only a couple I have been disappointed in. Love all the seedlings, especially Judy's Jewel X Bubblegum Queen #2

Nancy G. - I agree about there being so many colors and forms that there's a daylily for everyone. Most Davissons are hard to resist. I can understand why you have so many of them. The only two that don't appeal to me are Tahiti Sweetie and Mean Green.

Lovely post. Divas in Diamonds is a great color!!! Of the seedlings, Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha #4 and Judy's Jewel X Bubblegum Queen #2 are my favorites.
