the style of the room plays a huge role in the design.

If you plan to use a slab, I wouldn't add decorative tile, just keep it simple, but that's a personal choice.

A photo of the whole room would help with suggestions.

The space is all demo’ed right now but here are some before pics that I pulled from a video! The walls will be more of a creamy white but the tv and sectional will remain.

We also installed recessed lighting

@la_la Girl do you have any recommended tiles? We do want something simple. Do you think a surround is necessary? Also, is it worth removing the hearth to replace with a slab? The hearth gets in the way of our recliner in the corner.

I do think it is worth it to remove the raised hearth and get it flush with the flooring - it will feel less bulky and the room will feel more welcoming imo

Totally just my opinion and I am def note a pro but I'd skip tiles and do a low key granite or marble surround - maybe just a simple black honed granite (like an absolute black)?

(my BFF got the "latest" tiles for her fireplace surround just a few years ago and it already looks a bit dated ~ sorry I know a lot of people hate that word)

Is anyone able to alter my picture and show me what it would look like without the hearth and just a floor slab, and a simple mantle? I tried to do it myself in Windows Paint, but it does not look right. Wonder if it will look weird to have the opening floating 9 inches above the floor, with a fireplace glass door on it.

First does it work ? Taht hearth seems ridiculous size no matter what. I happen to like the simple style of the original . what was wrong with it ? You could have just added a mantel

It does work, we use the wood burning fireplace quite a bit in the winter. Previously, we painted over this black and turquoise marble tile...so the blue is actually paint that was peeling off and turning black from soot over the years. It was actually terrible even though the pic looks OK. The hearth is really big, which is why we're thinking floor slab.

a surround isn't necessary with a mantel.

With your demo, I would remove the hearth for a clean finish.

Make sure you select glass doors that are well designed and not full of extra metal.

I like the one you posted above - I wonder how it would look if the slab went up to the ceiling? Maybe that would be too modern (w/o a mantel) + the ceiling may not be tall enough.
