how would you update this kitchen?

I’m looking to update this kitchen - although I love parts of it, I’d like it to look a bit less “Tuscan”.

You can update it with a different paint color, and new light fixtures. It will make a huge difference.

The kitchen cabs are fine … the reality tho is w no drawers spending money will lead to regrets. a good update should take the kitchen forward some time and you find yourself sitting in year 2035 w no drawers in your kitchen that you updated in 2025. lots of folks w late 90’s early 2000 spaces will have this dilemna. id say hang on ….it looks okay … a new kitchen will be a better deal / easy w no corners rta frameless will be a huge improvement. its not overly tuscan anyway.

There’s nothing Tuscan about that kitchen…except perhaps, the wall color. That’s an easy fix.

Totally agree with @herbflavor, the lack of lower drawers is what dates the kitchen. Look around this site, and others. Lower drawers is what you’ll see. Large drawers for pots, pans and lids. Drawers are so much more convenient, than doors with pullout drawers…and, lower drawers hold more, and are much easier to organize.

Oh, also, the raised back of the island is no longer is style. The more current look is one flat surface for the island.

I greatly dislike tile floors…so hard on the joints and back to stand on for any length of time. But, that’s me.

Meant to add…I’d definitely change out the ubiquitous, cheap looking pendants, for something more current looking.

- Paint walls

- straighten bottom of vent hood/remove corbels and decorative wood applique on front

- change backsplash - the decorative tile above cooktop dates kitchen

- change pendants

- If you decide to change out countertops, you could change island from two levels down to all one level (countertop height).

New wall color, new pendants, new backsplash. Maybe test remove one of the corbels to see if you need to/can match the stain underneath.

Step 1. New paint color, new pendants, remove corbels. (Should not be hard to color match the stain underneath if needed.)

If that is not enough, step 2. Make island single level, though you'll have to rethink outlets. New counters and backsplash.

Exactly what Kendrah said in step 1 plus remove the decorative piece on the front of the hood. That will make a world of difference.

Though drawers may be more popular than doors right now, that is not something I even notice and I don't think many people would see doors and think - OMG how dated. Same with raised bar on the island. Though I despise those it doesn't make me think dated - just not my cup o' tea.
