How are you cleaning GE Cafe range burners?

last year

How are you all cleaning your range burners? That's the piece out of which the flames come. I don't think it matter, but we have the GE Café 30” Smart Slide-In, Front-Control, stove Gas Range with Convection Oven.

Manual says not to wash in dishwasher because it may discolor. Why would you make a range where some parts are NOT dishwasherable?! I am not going to use a brush to clean all six burners every week. So I put it in the dishwasher. I don't care about discoloration, but when they came out, they had a weird powder-y coating that...forced me to handwash to get out.

I've put them in the oven on the steam cleaning setting. But then I still have to hand wash.

Anyone have a better way to clean the burners? We cook all the time, so I need to clean once a week. And GE, if you're listening, make all the parts dishwasher safe, please!

I would remove them, and spray them with dawn power wash, and let sit about 15-30 minutes, and then scrub them.

Why do you think that you have to clean the burner heads every week? Unless you spill stuff on them they should say clean. Are you just cleaning them as a matter of routine or are you examining them for clogs that require cleaning? If the burner heads had a "weird powder-y coating" on them after washing, didn't other items in the dishwasher also have this coating? Couldn't you just wipe off the coating with a sponge?

I have the same range and get that coating when I put the "disks" in the dishwasher. I half don't care about any spots/splatter anymore. Occasionally when I do a deep clean of the cookttop, I hit them with Pink Stuff paste or barkeepers friend.

cat_ky – Thanks! Will buy the Dawn power wash and try it out and report back!

wdccruise – I cook a couple of times a week.

There used to be a TV commercial for something (I assume some sort of cleaner) that I think had the tagline about something like “cooking with abandon.” Guy with this great grin flipping sauces in pans over his range and moving pasta water around and slopping things EVERYWHERE! Used to make me grin with sheepish self-recognition and make my wife grimace in recognition! HAHAHA! So, I have stuff burned on burners on a weekly basis! I should probably clean after every cook, but really, life is too short.

As to the powder-y coating, I discovered it taking the burners out of the dishwasher and realizing that there was this grey powder on my hands. Even though it transferred off to my hands by touch, it still took brushing them with BarKeeper’s Friend to get the powder off the burners. And if I’m going to have to brush them anyway, why dishwash them? But weirdly, nothing else had the powder on them, so maybe it was a reaction to the heated dry?

pennfire – thanks for confirming that I’m not simply crazy. If the Dawn power wash doesn’t work for me, I’ll check out the Pink Stuff paste.

But really, I was hoping for some answer that didn’t involve brushing the burners. GRRRRRR, stupid GE. The burners are metal. You couldn’t use a dishwasher safe metal? Whoever heard of metal that can’t stand up to a dishwasher anyway!?

    Cast iron.

A quick Internet search indicates that the burners are likely aluminum.
