Keep in mind that you're inviting some design pros and people with a design eye into your home via photos. If they walked into your actual space, they would take in all of it: all four sides, doorways, floors, windows, ceiling, built-in fixtures, lighting, trim--the "givens"--then the features that can be changed--furnishings, paint, art, rugs, decor items, etc. It's all one first impression. Same thing with photos. That's why it's important to provide well lit photos of the entire space, taken from all sides of a room regardless of the size of your problem.

@housegal200 Hope you don’t mind me saying, but I’ve noticed that your standard reply contains requests/comments that are often irrelevant/may overwhelm. You have great suggestions but I thought you might like the feedback (it does mean a more custom response each time). Ignore me otherwise!!!

When posting, it is recommended to post all walls in the room so it can be shown what the entire space looks like so commenters can provide the best advice.

Initially, walls are bare so placing artwork can do wonders to bringing life to the room.

Thanks everyone! I am painting and definitely adding more decor pieces just wanted to be happy with the furniture arrangement first! We moved in when I was pregnant so my focus really wasn't on anything but the baby's room! (Unfortunately I have to keep it simple until we're out of the toddler phase!)

We need more information... please post pictures of all 4 walls. Dimensions of the room would also help for the layout of your furniture. All we see is a sofa and 1 armchair (that's covered).

Is there a TV on the wall with the fireplace? Because your seating seems "aimed" at that wall. What would really help create coziness is a arranging the two seating pieces to face each other, or at least in an L, so they create a conversational group. If they also need to face a TV, maybe the TV could go on the blank wall, with the other pieces moved around. If you could give us a sketch with the dimensions of all walls and windows marked, it would really help people suggest good furniture arrangements.

I'm waiting for the side pieces for the fire place so ignore that! That hole above is a vent I took the cover off to paint!

I’m so in love with the fireplace tractors at the top. Priceless! You have a few quirky moments like that in this room. I say lean into them so this space has a bit of levity and fun to contrast the heavy antiques and beige rug and sofa.

Do you have any interest in painting this room? A bit of warm color could bring this space to life.

Hang art on the wall above the chaise side of your sofa. Something that reads well across the room versus something intricate.

Get a sizable floor plant or two.

I’d get more colorful throw pillows too. Again something that reads well from far away.

@maureen: Thanks for the insights. I do a cut and paste boot camp approach when posters come on expecting advice, and all commentors have to go on is a single photo and limited visual information.. The boilerplate puts a stop to multiple commentors asking for more photos. On just this thread, there are five requests for more information and photos. My cut-to-the-chase approach is so all of us who do comment can move onto suggestions. I'd rather get it out of the way so I can spend more time researching helpful photos and offer tailor-made information. I get what you're saying, but I'm still going to cut and paste that boilerplate so readers wanting advice start looking at their whole room organically and not just one wall or feature. Everything in a well designed space needs to connect.

Below is a visual of my suggestions.

- Centre your sofa with the window instead of in the corner

- Place an end table in the corner under the pendant

- Replace the pendant with a larger one that hangs lower above the end table

- Place coordinated accent pillows on the sofa (navy, cream, lime green)

- Place a storage unit next to the fireplace for toys, books, etc.

- Place a round coffee table

- Get a stretch slipcover in navy for the recliner and place your round table with the lamp next to it - at the end of the sofa

- Find a large framed art or canvas for the back wall and a plant

Everything can be inexpensive, everything I show is from Amazon except the storage unit which is from Ikea.

If you provide a floor plan of the room showing all dimensions doors, windows, etc. perhaps a better furniture layout can be suggested.

--Float the sofa to face the far wall where the TV will go. This will give you a view of your very attractive windows. Get light, white ceiling to floor drapes at JC Penney or Target. The dark curtains you have bring down the room.

--Put your armchair in far right corner near the window with a floor lamp or current lamp you have. Yes, per lisedv, stretch slipcover for armchair would improve things.

--Since you have a little one, on the far wall, set up something like this with affordable Ikea type pieces across most of the current far wall. But leave room on the left corner for your child's little table and chairs so their own furniture is part of the living space. Add a kiddie size armchair facing the floating sofa. The baskets can hold the overflow toys that can be put away.

--Can you remove the top of the big cabinet in your entryway? Turn it into an entryway console with a large thrift store mirror above it--this idea. Paint the interior front door a color you like that goes with whatever art work you choose in the rest of the space. (This photo has many things going on that would work so well in your space: sofa turned the other way to face the far wall; a beautfiful throw over the back of the floating sofa; white airy curtains; colorful door; catch-all low console; possible hooks or a chair near the front door.
