the only way to lighten the orange colored existing, is to sand it down and re stain it.

What kind of seal finish did you use? an oil base? or water base poly?

You can darken it. What dark color did you have in mind for the beam?

We did not seal or stain it it yet, it comes from the lumbar place like that. I think it must have been pre treated that way. Sanding may be the best option.

We are looking at Behr stain and seal Chestnut for the beams.

Behr makes a White Wash pickling stain

if you haven't put a clear coat on yet, you could sand and try that.

Just remember an oil base finish will yellow too.

A water base poly clear coat won't change in color.

I am not an expert, but would recommend looking at a semi solid stain. We used one on our cedar, called Wood Lux. There are many different color choices. ( you can also get transparent or solids if you find that you like them better than the semi solids). You have 3 different types of wood, so each will take the stain a little differently. If you use a semi solid, it will bring a little uniformity to your situation, but still allow the graining of the wood to come through. Not an expert, but having been through staining recently would highly recommend that you sample whatever you chose on all 3 types of wood that you are using whatever product you chose. Even if you do the beams a shade or two darker, I think you will find the semi solid helps with the areas that are knotted, as that takes the stain quite differently than the other areas of the wood.
