Lost with roofing contractor

Help!!

My roofing contractor did not order enough shingles the first time. So we had to order a second batch. The second batch box looks different than the first box. Both boxes are Timberline HDZ. But the first order box says “weath wood” and the second order box says “weath wood hdz”. I don’t know anything about roofing, but looking at the shingles in both boxes, they do look slightly different. Anyone has an idea what exactly is the difference between the boxes?

So frustrated because it is taking forever for them to replace the roof!! Tomorrow will be the 4th day :(

You are not forced to use them. Your roofer is responsible for you to have all the same shingles on your roof. You are paying for that. Its up to him as a roofer to make sure that it all looks good. Do not accept less. Its time to stand up and let them know that you will not accept shingles that dont match.

Have you matched the color code on the old boxes with the new ones to see if they are from a different color lot? You need to look up what the various numbers/codes on the boxes mean for Timberlane (for example, where is the color lot # located on the box?)

I don't understand why some boxes have "HDZ" on them - but the others don't. How does a roofing contractor claim that they are the same. If they were, all boxe would have "HDZ" on them. Ask him to explain why the boxes are different if it's the same exact product?

However, if it was my house, I would call Timberline tomorrow morning and ask them directly. That would be the easiest/fastest way to confirm what shingles have been delivered.

Thank you! i was planning to do that but the issue is the roofer company is forcing us to use it. So dealing with that. lowes has what we have, but not sure about the quality!

Two different shingle lines entirely. The HDZ is a different and series with colors not being the same. The HDZ series is a higher definition shingle. Your roofer screwed the pooch here.

You tell him, you want what you picked out, and for them to all be alike. Its his problem, not yours. Hopefully, you havent paid him anything, and let him know you wont pay until its all done to your satisfaction. Its your house. You deserve exactly what you wanted when you hired him. You are his boss, he isnt yours.

I found what we need in lowes. Will the quality of shingles be any different if we get from a supplier vs lowes

Just read through these links. on google. You need to make sure your installer will still install, if you buy from another source.

This is an open and shut case. HDZ are a different line. One sitting on the ground next to the other you may not notice, but you will notice when they are on the roof and not intermixed all across the roof. Roofer effed up with calcs, trying to take easy way out with whatever was obtainable the quickest. He is just not going to make as much money as he thought because of the wait and extra trips, that's his fault, and yours to make clear to him.

Bumping this older thread since I found it on Google while researching my own roof.

Never let a contractor mix shingles from different supplier batches. Even if the color name matches, different manufacturing runs have slight dye variations that will make your finished roof look like a patchy checkerboard under the sun. Good local crews strictly avoid big-box retail runs for shortfalls. When I had my roof replaced over in Eau Claire, Wolf River Construction explicitly noted that they always order a 10-15% waste factor from a single distributor lot to avoid this exact issue.

Hold your ground and don't release final payment until they fix it with a matching batch.
