Inset vs full overlay kitchen cabinets

Getting ready for a major kitchen refresh. Torn between painted inset shaker cabinets vs full overlay . Still in the sticker shock mode with the inset price. Need help weighing out the pro and cons. Love the shea mcgeen kitchen but unfortunately I need to get the look without the price. Any help will be greatly appreciated .

I have painted inset shaker cabinets in my kitchen and full overlay (same finish and door style) in my laundry room. Lovely as they are, I would not splurge on inset cabinets in a future renovation if it would place a strain on my budget. I never walk into the laundry and think, “Oh, I wish these cabinet doors were inset.”

This new thin profile Shaker door creates an interesting appearance for kitchen. Still full overlay but the cabinet faces span the difference between traditional and modern.

You can take full overlay cabinets and make them appear more like insert doors by adding a filler strip between each cabinet.
