Best low profile platform bed mattress. Possibly 9-10"?

I like to replace my current mattress on a platform bed. My current mattress is about 9" thick, consisting of three Latex layers. It is the kind where I was able to select the layers and combine.

Due to the design of my platform bed, I prefer a "thinner" mattress for look. Otherwise it seems it swallows to much of the the integrated headboard.

Generally, I sleep well on any mattress. i.e. hotels

It seems that generally reviews are pointing towards a Nectar. However, it is about 12" high.

Room and board has a 9", but did not feel comfortable to me.

What mattress should I be looking for?

wirecutter did a recent review of mattresses depending on type preferred (memory foam, latex or hybrid) a lot depends on your preferences and how much you want to spend

thanks for sharing. I think my challenge is to find the best low profile. Did not know about the Leesa 10"

Here is what I found so far:

1.) 9" - Latex layers (https://sleepez.com/product/natural-latex-mattress/) - what I have so far, but want to change

2.) 9" - Room and board (https://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/bedroom/mattresses/luxury-mattress) - did not find it the best for me trying in store

3.) 10" - Leesa (https://www.leesa.com/products/leesa-mattress). Wirecutter seems to like it

4.) 9.25" - Purple (https://purple.com/mattresses/purple-bed). They actually have a 8" mattress. No idea about comfort of either.

    5.) 10" - Tempurpedic https://www.tempurpedic.com/shop-mattresses/tempur-cloud-mattress/v/3882/

    6.) 10" - Tuft & Needle (https://www.tuftandneedle.com/products/original-mattress?variant=42295924293698)

    7.) 8" (and up) SleepNumber (https://www.sleepnumber.com/categories/mattresses-classic-series?tab=config)

    8.) 8" and 10" Sealy Dreamlife (https://www.sealy.com/sealy-dreamlife-collection/)

    Added 6, 7, 8

We have a purple, the firmer one, and find it very comfortable. It’s about 9”.

Related question: Can you put a regular innerspring mattress on a platform bed? (sans boxsprings, of course).

added some more options to list (Sealy Dreamlife, Sleepnumber, and Tuft and Needle)

How about updating one of the latex layers you're using now. Sleep On Latex has Dupont latex in 3" and less toppers. If you can post a pic of the headboard at the platform junction maybe a mount change could add height to make choosing easier.

We also have one of the basic/firmer purple mattresses and it’s 9 inches tall. We love it! We have a platform bed frame as well.

Avocado mattresses also have a 9” latex and wool mattress. they do have some stores depending on where you live.

Meanwhile we started the process of visiting stores. Going to dedicates stores like Purple is painless. But some others remind me a bit of a used car sales experience :-)

I am pretty sure I want to switch away form Latex. It is hard to explain what I find wrong with it. But mostly it seems not to cradle. More like a rubber band that contours around body.

I tried again memory foam. Whenever I try in store it does not feel right to me. Then again I slept very well on memory foam in ski rentals

Needless to say going with thinner mattresses will be a tradeoff. But sometimes have the feeling that mattresses are made excessively tall to show value of $$$

Regarding my platform bed construction. I could remove the slats and brackets that hold the bunkie board. It is a leather wrapped metal frame. So, lowering the brackets woudl not be that easy. However, I could put a base inside. But I don't think I ma going to like the aesthetics of the many legs underneath.

A leather wrapped metal frame that would make choices easier if it were 3 or 4 inches up. I'd look into that no matter what you want as a mattress material. A picture couple get you feedback ideas. I sleep on latex over pocketed coil springs.

PRODUCT-SLEEMON has smart mattresses which use ai to regulate variable support. Sold in 70 countries. Not sure about US availability .Link.

@dan1888 - seems like AI woudl be perfect to measure/analyze a sleeper and create a perfect custom mattress. For example, I don't really understand why many mattress have the same layers in the entire mattress. Seems like lower legs and hips should be different for example.

    Here are some pics:

1.) overall bed look that wants me not to use a taller mattress

2.) brackets underneath. Possibly could be lowered by 3/4". Not sure whether it is going to be worth it

We have four layers of latex…extra firm, firm, medium, soft (bottom to top) and love it. It is extremely heavy but very comfy and supportive. Latex is not memory foam, I don’t know how people sleep on foam.

I have a metal platform bed from IKEA, which was a replacement for a teak platform bed. The IKEA bed is great, except that the mattress rests on slats in a shallow box that is about 3 inches deep. Trying to put a fitted sheet on the mattress is sooo difficult, even with my current foam mattress. I need to replace the mattress, but I’m concerned that anything new will present me with the same issue. And anything too thick may overwhelm the footboard.

How thick is the bunkie board? those can come in various heights

After some more trials I seem to like the

Leesa Sapira Hybrid Mattress (11") and Nectar Lux (sadly 14") best

The Leesa Original (10") was surprisingly good.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to try Tuft&Needle in Chicago. They retail in Create and barrels. But have limited selection. We were only bale to try the Mint (12") which seemed not bad. But like to test others and in better place.

if you are giving up on needing a 9” mattress. i would look more closely at Avocado green mattresses. we have been very happy with ours

@wsea. Seems like I have to go to at least 10" or 11"

Unfortunately, there appears to be no Avocado showroom/retailer in the Chicago area.
