Mount the TV at eye level seated. I personally never mount a TV where it can be seen from outdoors, but sometimes that doesn't pan out. Without measurements, it's difficult to plan ahead, you may just have to try different arrangements until it feels right for you/him.

if the display cabinets are identical, I would flank the TV with them to create a built in effect.

We had never thought of flanking the TV with the cabinets - good idea!

Here is a layout for the room using the existing furniture with my best buess on the sizes.

Now for the difficult conversation.

You say your son is moving across the country. None of this furniture is worth the cost involved in moving it. You think this home looks charming, ......maybe to you. It all looks like mom's hand-me-downs. Whether your son is straight or gay, this is not a good look for a bachelor's apartment.

Have him sell it all (burn those drapes, geesh) and then select items that fit the style of the new location when he arrives.

If he's headed West he can easily pull together a complete room from Living Spaces. They have a wide assortment of modestly priced furnishings and he can do one stop shopping if he is inclined.

You might try moving the TV to the blank wall where the sofa currently is. Then place the sofa on the other blank wall. This will give you a TV viewing area and you could easily then place a swivel chair next to the fireplace to create a small reading nook. The layout might look a little like this image from a design of ours below, aside from the fireplace area.

Wiles, the gold room with the furniture is the old house. He is moving into the empty space.

Beverly, thanks for your layout and thoughts, but here is the background. Son is a disabled vet who purchased the blue sofa and chair within the last year. The leather recliner was moved up from his basement family room when he couldn't manage the stairs following (another) surgery, and he knows it doesn't go with his new pieces, but this is what he has and likes. He would never go to a store and buy a roomful of beige and is happy with his quirky stuff, even the horrible curtains, which came with the house. They will not make the move, thank goodness.

Our goal is to set up the room so that it looks balanced, has a good traffic pattern and he can watch tv from a recliner. He has a lot of cool items collected from his world travels so would like to use both of the cabinets if at all possible.

OK...........just another perspective.
