Depends on the style of the balance of the home and the locale. TV above the fireplace for me would be an automatic non-starter and the fist thing that would need to go. In my mind the wall panels are more hideous than the FP.

The TV appears to be in danger of falling on someone as they walk by, and is too high. Better placement would be on the wall next to the fireplace. The wall treatment on either side of the fireplace does nothing to enhance the room. Better to pick a solid color and paint. The mantel is too massive...a smaller version would be more complimentary.

I don't like the white ceiling, I would paint it a off white, greige color to start.

I also agree with above suggestions. I would also paint the ceiling in flat paint and perhaps a tad warmer hue. It is super shiney! Usually my eye is drawn to the windows, but the ceiling has so much glare, it's the first thing I noticed. If you have the funds, replace the stone if you dislike it. I would replace it, but the other changes mentioned would take priority.

I suggest you remove what looks like wallpaper and paint the wall charcoal/black, install slim floating cabinets with a wood top with the TV above on one side (will be at a proper viewing height) and art and a lamp on the other side, a large canvas of your choice, and a large area rug to bring it all together.

Lots of good ideas here. But they still leave you with an unattractive stone. I’d remove the while fireplace, but I get that some people like them.

If rustic is not your thing remove mantle and and cover rock with wall board. That would leave a chance to return to the rock later. You could cover wallboard/sheetrock with porcelain tile for a sleek look or add a very traditional carved stone mantle. At least paint walls and move tv.

My advice is a combo of what other people have suggested.

Definitely get rid of whatever is on the walls. Match a color, not too dark, not too cool, from the stone and paint the walls. That way the fireplace will visually relate to the space and not look like it was plopped on the wall.

Then add a generously sized area rug with the colors of the stone, the floor, a little white and the brown furniture. It will ground the space and visually tie everything together.
