What is your growing zone? Also, what is the sun exposure for your patio? My zone isI 6B + I have a western exposure = lots of afternoon sun for containers. I need that information in order to suggest any specific types of flowers/plants.

I have a TON of containers/pots with flowers/plants + hanging baskets on my patio + along my back fence + I've placed a four large ceramic planters (with two colors of bright pink impatiens) underneath the canopy of my river birch trees (that's the only way to get annual flowers to grow - otherwise, the roots of the birch trees steal all of the water!) My containers last through the end of October generally.

I always thought that I didn't have a "green thumb" - I would plant annuals out in my front landscaping bed each year + make two tall planters on the front porch, but didn't really do much out back. When we had a new paver patio built (including a covered portion + a fire pit area), I started having an interest in making containers for out back.

I now have a lot of containers/planters (last year I made 35+ containers) - too many if you ask my SO!

Well, for some reason, it's not letting me post any photos right now - that happens to me every once in awhile. I will be back later to give you some ideas. Plus, once I have the info re: zone + sun exposure, I will be able to suggest some easy plants/flowers to start with + some more "cranky" ones if you don't mind the time that's involved to take care of them.

How is the space used or how would you like to use it?

I am on zone 9a and 9b. I would like to decorate my patio with more flower pants, with small furniture items and few

Few decorations. I would like to sit in the morning and do some exercises.

You need to post how much sun the patio gets at different times of the day. I would try to grow plants that will survive your summers & your winters. Once you figure out the sunlight then you can go to a local nursery & ask what you could grow in the pots that will survive all year.

In your zone that should be easy to do. Start looking at HD or Lowes, they will start to clearance out their yard & Patio furniture very soon. Find a couple of chairs or a patio sofa that you like & a couple of tables. You could have a patio dining table & chairs if you like. Good Luck!

With containers fewer and larger is best for aesthetics and plant maintenance. Lots of little pots can look scrappy and are hard to keep watered. Try to use the best materials and toning colours you can afford too. If they have to be plastic try to find solid, realistic looking ones. Thin plastic soon bulges or breaks.
