Im leaning towards Frost Aster, Symphyotrichum pilosum.

Symphyotrichum ericoides leaves have this bent orientation and the tips are rounded and dull. The stems and leaves are pubescent just like in Symphotrichum pilosum. The species name is because of the leaves resembling heath.

This is Symphyotrichum pilosum.

You can see here how these lanceolate leaves come to a sharp point. The species name is for the pilose pubescence. Pilose and hirsute pubescence look almost alike, it's the textures of the hairs thats different. Hirsute feels rough and pilose feels soft.

The surest way to differentiate between S. ericoides from S. pilosum is by comparing the phyllaries. S. pilosum above has narrow phyllaries that have thorns at their tips.

Here we have Symphyotrichum ericoides with it's wide, dark green, heavilly recurved phyllaries.

Their are 89 species of Symphyotrichum in North America, and a couple Asters that are still in the genus Aster because they are circumboreal.
