How to remove spindle from this lock?

I have an old mortise lock and the latch mechanism is not working so I was trying to check if it was the latch spring that is broken. In the process of disassembling lock hardware, I am at a point where I am unable to take the spindles out. I tried removing them straight out from both sides but no luck.

Try some WD-40 and a mallet

And if that fails use a bfh.

should I be able to pull them out straight - is that how they should be working? are they two separate spindles? @klem1 @elunia

Typically 1 solid spindle. I have seen them where there is a swivel in the center and it is actually a 2 pc spindle but still comes out as a single piece. Spray it good with the WD-40 and let it sit for a couple house. If you can get Kroil that will work even better than the WD and is really the better go to for most anything that needs freeing up/lubricating.

Go ahead and remove both trim plates , the spindle might be attached to one of those. Besides that if it isn't attached you will never be able to get lubricant where spindle passes through latch with trims blocking access.
