Poll / Advice -- Junior Master Suite Layout

last modified: 2 months ago

Hi Houzz Community,

Your advice and vote on a bedroom layout would be greatly appreciated. It is a Junior Master Suite, which connects to the Primary Master Bedroom on one side, and a Hallway on the other side.

My wife, our architect, and I all have different opinions as to which one is the best, and so I will avoid saying anything that might bias your votes on way or another. Could you take a look, and help by voting and/or commenting on Options A, B, C and D please?

Thanks very much!

Initial thought - how is the master bedroom laid out?

I am torn between B&D. I like D because of the storage on the wall opposite the bed and if the master bed is on the shared wall , then it won't be against a bathroom wall. But I like B because the bed is further from the master bedroom ( again depending what is located on that shared wall).

    Need more info

Who will use this "junior master suite"?

Why the connecting door instead of going through the hallway?

^^^I have the same question - why is there a direct door between this "junior master suite" and the main master suite? When I've seen a plan labeled with a master suite + a junior master suite, typically the two are separated - either on opposite ends of the home OR if there are two levels, the master suite is downstairs and the junior master suite is upstairs.

I just am confused about the need to have a junior master suite attached directly to the master suite (there also is a door to the hallway right there - so, why need the direct access also?)

@chispa Thanks for your questions. When one of us snores / tosses and turns too much, the other would "escape", in the middle of the night, from the Master to the Junior Master. The person escaping wants the most directly path possible.

I think the bathrooms could be changed on all the options for a better use.

Built in storage for a more attractive room, and the swings on the doors changed.

When the room is not used as a getaway, will it be used as a guest room?

As for your first point, there are other junior master suites elsewhere in the house. This is a special one for us, the owners, with our unique, custom requirements.

I vote D. The flushing toilet noise will be the farthest away from the other bedroom.

I didn't know that "en suite" bedrooms became "junior master suites" - apparently, I have a home with three junior master suites + one primary master suite. Maybe that's why the value of my house + my real property taxes have gone up so much over the past 2-3 years . . . 🤣

Question - if I start calling them three junior en suite dream rooms + one primary en suite dream room will the value go up even more??!!? (if you've read a certain other post, you already know that bedrooms are now "dream rooms" LOL!)

Show the ENTIRE floor plan on which these bedrooms exist, please?

"This is a special one for us, the owners, with our unique, custom requirements."

It doesn't seem too special, especially the bath.

If someone is escaping a snore, and active sleeper, ? I'd want a much better bath.

Show all the sleeping / en suite JUNIOR MASTER ?? conditions in the house as there is not much "Primary/Master" to a 6' x 12' rather basic bath: ) when the other spouse simply needs a quiet bedroom, and perhaps a tv over a dresser.

D only because the bathroom is away from the master bedroom. No other reason.

If it is strictly for an escape for snoring, and not for other users, then the ensuite (in-room bathroom), closet, or desk do not make sense. But one cannot make a good judgment without the context of the entire plan. I would be looking at how (or maybe even why to begin with) in the future the direct access to the "Senior" Master suite can be blocked off without looking contrived when either "custom to owner" is no longer appropriate or when the offender finally purchases their CPAP machine.

    " Yes, the entire plan.....

There are other sleep problems that can’t be solved by cpap and this is a lovely way to be together/not together.

It would be helpful to know the pros and cons of the plans, according to you and your spouse. You don't need to tell us which opinion is yours and which is your spouse's, and whether you're the mover or the stayer.

So far you've told us that the mover wants a direct route - does that mean D? Does the stayer have any thoughts?

D is the best room layout (depending on what is on the other side of that bathroom wall). It doesn't put any storage right in a doorway, where you might get smacked by a door while you retrieve items from a dresser or shelf. BUT--if someone is fleeing a snorer, maybe he/she wants that bathroom space between the two beds? Have they taken some late-night measurements to see how much distance they need for sonic comfort?

We have a neighbor that planned an office to potentially have 2 doorways. They had one framed out but dry walled it, an option to consider.
