fire place mantel suggestions

I'm wondering if I can put a wood beam between the tv and has fire place? Would it look too cluttered? I feel like there needs to be something, either above or around the fireplace? I feel it could look better with something. Thoughts or suggestion of I can do? Or leave alone like is? Our house is open concept.
