Front Door Color & Style

We’re upgrading our front door from a single to a double door. What color and style of double door (solid, half-glass, etc.) would best complement the siding, stone, and overall exterior of our home?

We plan to remove the sidelites but keep the transom above without the dividing lines. Our neighbor already has a double door with this setup, and since our dimensions match, we know it’s possible.

As a side note, landscaping will be added soon.

I get it when someone thinks "this new door will enhance my house". I don't get it when it's just a change and you don't know what you want.

Yes, it can be done, but then each of the doors is less than the width of a standard entrance door, and unless you add a panel of glass you have cut off most of the light in the foyer.

I prefer the door you already have, over a double door. It fits the style of your house perfectly. Your house is very nice and looks well maintained. I would leave the door. I do, however, agree with PPF above about the one unmatching type window above that door. It should be replaced with windows that match the existing you already have. Replacing the window, and putting in a nice landscaping is all your house needs, for the front view to be well done.

if you are inspired by the neighbors door, ask them what's available to you.

I'd choose a full view, but that's a personal decision.

Paint the sidelights white so the white grids make more sense, replace the picture window so it matches your other windows in your traditional house, and put in great landscaping. Most people on here post about replacing their double doors with a single…

Not suggesting this style door, necessarily, but cobalt blue works very well with a recessed porch on a tan house. I like a single door in a striking color with the sidelights so your foyer gets light.

For reference, this is my neighbor’s house with a double door (same floor plan)

Oh, it's glass. Is that the way you're going? Then no problem with foyer being dark. If you get glass doors, match grids on the door to the second story window. Not crazy about the curlique door grids they chose. These should've been matched to the window grids.

I don’t particularly care for your neighbors’ doors. Somehow they look cheap, like they don’t belong on a classy home.

I like what you have much better.

“These should've been matched to the window grids.“

    Agree!

I’m not actually a fan of the specific style of our neighbor’s double doors - I prefer something cleaner and simpler than their curly design. But I do like how the double doors make the front of the house feel a bit more open and expansive. That’s the part I was using as a reference, just to show how the layout would work if we converted ours from a single to a double door.

Just unsure of the color and style of double doors that would suit our exterior the best

Maybe you are reacting to the color rather than the double door.

You could get solid sidelights too.

Or just matching glass in the door.

Your door is much more appealing than your neighbors double door. It looks out of place and isnt a good fit for the house at all. You can always paint the one you have if it is color you are craving and then also paint the sidelight frames, the same color as the door. Your neighbor, does however, have a better matching window above the doors than you do. It may be that just the grids are missing from yours, and they really need to be there.

I replaced double doors with a single door and sidelights--it's a much more classic look. Most all of the time we only used one door anyway, so the extra door was unnecessary.

I love the color of your door. What paint color did you use?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I’m going to look into replacing the window, though I know it’ll be costly.

Regarding the front door: based on everyone’s feedback, I’m leaning toward keeping the single door now.

Do you think there is a door color and/or style that might work better to enhance the look - something that complements the house’s exterior? Or do you think we are good as is?

Most of our neighbors did glass, examples below. I like the style but I don’t love the lack of privacy.

Nothing frosted glass can’t cure when it comes to privacy. Either order the glass with a frost or other glass that eill obscure, buy film or even a
spray. They all work when applied correctly, and still let in light.

Have you checked to see if you can just buy the grids for the existing window. Thats what your window is lacking, and they can be purchased separately. If you bought through a contractor, ask him, where the grids are. I would paint your door, and the sidelights and keep what you have, if you dont have to have glass. Replacing a door like that, adds up to thousands of dollars, all for something you dont even need. I would put those thousands of dollars towards the landscaping and do some fabulous plantings.

Every window in the house is double hung. That should be a pair of double hung windows sized to fit the space. The current door is fine. Just need a more fun color on the door itself, white sidelights so the fake grids blend in

@cat_ky, @HALLETT & Co., and anyone else who'd like to chime in, what color do you recommend for the door if we were to re-paint it?

I love a bright red door--Ben Moore Heritage Red, Watermelon Red, Ruby Red, Vermillion--are all great bright reds that will allow your front door to stand out.

And PLEASE, paint the sidelights the same as the trim.

If you are going to remove the sidelites and replace the door I will suggest a door that is at least half.

I do like red doors, if the red is a rusty type red (barn colored), however, my personal choice would be in the blue green. My own house is tan colored stone, and my doors are a very bright turquoise and I love that color.

Double doors are more difficult to decorate than single doors in my opinion. Choose a color that speaks to you instead of copying the neighbors. Landscaping will make a huge difference in the overall feel of your house.
