To paint or stain trim

I stripped the wood in my dining room and foyer and now I'm stuck. some pieces of wood retained the dark stain color that was popular in the early 1900s. i tried eveything and the color wouldnt lighten. my only option was to match it to the dark pieces. the only problem is we had an upstairs built and the stairs are very light. i just dont know if the walnut stain will clash, thoughts?

I prefer painted trim, so that is what I would do.

This is the reason why we never bought an old house with good quality original stained trim! Leave those houses for people who like the stained trim look.

"Was popular in the early 1900's"...I'm not seeing early 1900's trim. Even the design of the staircase doesn't look of a staircase of that time (not talking about the railing/metal). A landing would not be at the bottom of the stairs; the stairs would have a larger tread midway up and then curve. Your ceilings are low, windows are replaced. As chispa suggests, paint all the disparate trim the same color and the same finish.
