Kitchen designers - thoughts on the tariffs ? Are you making changes?

last month

To all my kitchen designers - what import brands are you selling? Are you considering bringing on new American made products? What brands are you looking at for price point ( since that seems to be the biggest category that will be hit. I have Great Northern and Kraftmiad where I am but need those more entry level lines ( like Forevermark, Cubitac and Fabuwood ) . Thoughts??

All of those will be hit hard with the tariffs. All imported.

I know that. Those are the lines I have now. I am looking for ones that are comparable and won't get hit with tariffs and everyone's opinions on the tariffs themselves and if they have heard anything from their reps.

The lowest price domestic option that is still "OK" would be Aristokraft. Kith is too much private label to everyone on the planet and is starting to suffer quality wise. Not that they were great quality to begin with. There just isn't a lot else in that super cheap low end product that is US manufactured.

I believe Mantra cabinets are made in the USA, and they are at a lower price point.

Kendrah, I’m sure you know that anything that could enroach on politics and policy led to the demise of the Hot Topics forum. Hence the crickets. I’m anticipating the removal of a thread on the conversations forums any hour.

Mantra is made in Vietnam. Very much subject to the tariffs.

Well. ( not 100% applicable ) All I do is what I do with my KD, and she has fabulous product, Pioneer, USA and out of Pennsylvania. They will do virtually anything and she has a long standing and great relationship with them. We're also not too far from real Amish - should someone want to go that way.

But....there are tariffs on a lot of categories in design, from fabric to lighting. It hasn't been a huge factor or deterrent. Frankly......not a lot worse than the darn sales tax &^^%%$ here, and less, anywhere between 3% and the worst at 7% and rarer by a lot thank heavens.

You might want to put this on the Pro Page, Deb.....though the traction there is FAR LESS than the good ol days: )

The have’s don’t care. The have not’s weren’t buying anyway. It’s all the regular folks in between who have put a stop to anything discretionary. Quick way for to accelerate a recession into a depression in order to finalize 2025 militarily.

I don’t have an answer . It sucks . You will pay more no matter what and the option may be pay more and get a lesser product because tariffs raise prices on everything . One option is to find a place that bought enough stock in advance that’s in warehouses in USA and not subject to tariffs yet . But I don’t know how to go about that . In all seriousness ask ChatGPT what you want and it can do the research and give you a list

I live in the heart of Amish country and love the quality, but it isn't inexpensive.

Ikea is my go to when recommending budget cabinets. This is the class where I think we will see problems.

Pioneer is more than double the cost of an Ikea kitchen - solid wood, worth what they are asking, but not in everyone's budget.

Anyone here know an Ikea price point cabinet that has equivalent quality and is made in the USA?

" Anyone here know an Ikea price point cabinet that has equivalent quality and is made in the USA? "

Does not exist. Has never existed. Similar particle board construction and very very limited size frameless just is not a US thing. You'd have to move to framed cabinet to get the rock bottom pricing that Ikea or the cheap imports have had. And neither will be that price point anymore.

Even Aristokraft has 5 times the SKU's of Ikea. Merillat Basics is as close to that limited options that you can get, and it's framed, with 4 doors and roughly 6 colors available, with some styles being partial overlay. No one has low end frameless in the US market. Cannot be done with US labor and no framelss culture infrastructure. You'd have to rebuild an entire industry from the ground up, and change the US thinking that composite materials are inferior. That will not happen for at least 2 more generations of cabinet makers.

    Hi Debbi,

J&K is our import line. When we saw the market here start to slow down about a year ago, we put in a new J&K display for our flippers and entry level clients. We are selling a lot of it. J&K has great quality control. I can honestly say, I think we've only had one issue in many years. They take photos of every cabinet as it's boxed up. They're freakish control freaks, LOL!

Only issue I have with J&K is their full overlay is REALLY full! There is very little exposed frame...it's almost like Frameless! You have to be careful. I don't design this with cabinets opening toward a hood or overrange microwave. It could rub! My install crew is now very aware of this....and we have "tricks of the trade" to work around this.

However, I recently did a price check comparison of all my cabinet lines and was shocked by the outcome.

Here are my numbers for the following. I quoted just two cabinets.

Cabinets include W3030 and B30; all quoted in a recessed panels shaker door in a white painted finish. J&K is priced assembled and I added $20 per cabinet for delivery fee by J&K to homeowners. Average kitchen delivery by J&K is $250 for full kitchen delivery.

From LEAST $ to MOST $. NOT my cost....this is customer cost without sales tax, without install and without delivery to the house. Includes freight to my store from the factory.

$721 Shiloh Cabinetry "Nevara" Series; Frameless. Imported. Assembled in Missouri

    $770 J&K Dove Door Imported

$800 Aspect Cabinetry (by Shiloh); half overlay. Made in USA

$871 J&K Pure White or Pebble door Imported

    $908 KraftMaid "Elements" Entry series

$1080 Kraftmaid PB Constr. Lyndale Shaker Door; half overlay

$1253 Medallion "Silverline Series" Jackson Door

$1273 KraftMaid Vantage Series (All Wood; Wood Interiors) Constr. Lyndale Shaker Door 1/2

$1273 Shiloh Beaded Inset; Recessed shaker panel door; plywood constr.

$1299 Eclipse by Shiloh - Frameless line

$1578 Medallion "Gold Line Series" Cabinetry Potters Mill

After doing this little research study, I'm going to start suggesting Aspect more to my clients. This is an entry level product made by Shiloh! But they offer some customization....and they offer a LOT of SKU's and cabinet sizes.

Unfortunately we no longer carry a high end line. I was a longtime dealer of Plain & Fancy....and unfortunately, we didn't have the demand and they eventually let us go as a dealer. That was sad for me because I ADORE that cabinet line.

We just haven't sold much high end in the last 12 years. The market has changed, at least where I am in Ohio. People don't stay in homes for 30-50 years anymore. When asked what they are looking for, they say, "I want something good, a decent quality but not the best of the best, I don't need anything fancy. Something that looks and is isn't gonna fall apart in a few years, and I don't want to spend too much". Isnt that what all of your clients say too???? LOL

What I was most shocked by was the new Nevara line by Shiloh....wow! And how $$$ Medallion Gold series was compared to KraftMaid. They used to be very close in price. By the way, the Nevara line is one door and one color.....white paint only.

Wow The KitchenPlace! Thanks so much for this info. It is very helpful. My customers are the same way. I used to sell a lot of Kraftmaid Vantage and Candlelight but now my clients are older and only staying 5 -10 ears in their homes so they are doing Fabuwood and Forevermark.

I am concerned for what it will be like moving forward through all this tariff stuff!

Semi Handmade is overpriced 3rd party dreck. Peels in just a short period of time. The lowest low end possible. They don’t even make anything either. They are just resellers, with even more markup on section 8 quality.

We have just received notice from Kraftmaid and Great Northern ( both "American companies"). All my brands are making it sound like there won't be much notice of the increases.

This was also stated in one of the letters:

" In addition, two other significant developments may impact future costs in our industry:

    • A ruling on Anti-Dumping/Countervailing Duties, expected before year-end, which may raise duties on imported plywood.

    • The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a case that could impact how tariffs are applied under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). "

So it looks like these tariffs will be affecting domestic brands because of plywood supply.

    Buckle up!
