help picking replacement windows to withstand brutal heat in Savannah

last month

Does anyone have advice about replacement windows for my family home? Current windows are at least 40 years old, fogged, some aren’t closing so air comes in…

Are you talking full framed replacements or insert type windows? Stile of windows, dbl hung, csmnt, etc.? How many windows? DIY or hiring out?

Style: double hung ( get single hung?) not dyi, ~36 windows, windows that fit in existing space of old windows

So full framed windows then? You would be removing the entire old unit?

Yes, removing old windowsi for new ones

I would look at Marvin or Kolbe, most likely aluminum clad. That is if you want a wood window. Marvin Elevate for fiberglass, and OKNA if vinyl. All are good products.

Many thanks millman… I have an appointment with Marvin soon. had an Andersen salesmen over yesterday… but I need more info before I spend that kind of money. Andersen makes it sound like fiberglass and vinyl are not good🤷‍♀️

    thank you.

Interesting as Renewal by Andersen is all fiberglass (Fibrex) and many of there other lines have Fibrex exteriors.

Umh - I don't think Renewal by Andersen windows are fiberglass.

And for Kathy - you don't have to buy Andersen windows from Renewal by Andersen; nor buy Marvin windows from Marvin Replacement. And with RbA (at least) your choice of products will be limited - eg. no aluminum clad options.

Fibrex is made of wood fibers and polymer…I learned in the Andersen sales pitch.dennisgli, are aluminum clad options a good choice? why not buy from Andersen or Marvin? I dont understand what you mean exactly? I’m looking up RbA.

I don't know much about Marvin Replacement but Renewal by Andersen (RbA) doesn't sell all the products that Andersen makes. I'm sure that the "Andersen salesmen" doesn't work for Andersen corporation in Minnesota - since you are in Georgia I would assume that they work for:

    Renewal by Andersen of Georgia

    2005 Newpoint Place

    Suite 100

    Lawrenceville, GA 30043

If you are interested in Andersen aluminum clad windows I doubt that they will sell them to you - and they will probably tell you that the "wood fibers and polymer" windows that they sell are 'better'. RbA also has a reputation of high prices and high pressure sales tactics. I have Andersen replacement windows in my house and have been very happy with them - but I did not buy them from RbA - I used a local contractor and the price was very reasonable and the installation was quality.

    Hope that helps.

dennisgli, thank you for this input. you he me a lot. I met with a Pella rep yesterday… very low key no lengthy show presentation… Andersen rep spooked me when he had me signing things when I kept telling him I needed more time to look at the info… too aggressive.
