can you help me to decide?

Hey everyone! 👋
We’re getting ready to replace our roof shingles soon, and thought it might be a great time to give the front of our house a little refresh too.

I’m torn between two portico styles — one with a hip roof (which feels warm and classic) and another with a gable roof (a bit more modern and crisp).
We really want to find a nice way to blend both styles so everything looks balanced and natural with the rest of the house.

Any tips or ideas on how to make the transition smoother?
Would love your thoughts on colors, stone tones, trim, or any little detail that could tie it all together.

Thanks so much for your help — can’t wait to hear what you all think! 🙏

Just to clarify — I’m not a professional designer 😊 I was just playing around with ChatGPT to visualize a few ideas. These are two different portico styles, and as you can see, the proportions aren’t perfect. I mainly wanted to get a sense of which style might look better with our current house. 💛

The scale of all three are too large for your home. The canopy should be more open to light IMO.

The current roof color is just perfect! Here's a more budget friendly and attractive way to upgrade your façade:

--Same roof color since it perfectly harmonizes with the brick.

    --No shutters added

--Cedar/cedar look/wood garage skin door and cedar front door. Photo just for color--plain garage door. This is to show palette for your house.

--Deep garden bed to the right to give much more attention to the house side instead of the double garage side. This idea only flipped to the right side.

I'd skip the addition and focus on getting the best roof color, changing the trim color, and landscaping.

Here I've used a darker paint (and I'd pick a different color) to help unify the look, keeping a lighter color around the door.

The front door and flanking windows are not the best look for this house, but the windows stand out by being dark and not matching the double window to the right.

For the roof, consider a darker color with less variation.

your option appear to heavy for your home, I would do something more open. THE same pitch as your living room roof pitch.

replacing the roof? How about a standing seam? Paint the garage door a deep rich color like SW Polished Mahogany, same with the trims for a new look. No Shutters.

Thank you all so much for your kind and thoughtful comments! I really appreciate all the feedback and different perspectives. I’m starting to see the potential my house already has without necessarily adding a portico — maybe it’s more about playing with colors, improving the landscaping, and possibly updating the front door. Your ideas really helped me see it in a new way!

Thank you for being open to suggestions that could save you money in the long run. With the money you save from not making structural changes, get a professional garden designer for a front garden bed, great lighting, possible wood front door (or just strip and stain it to go with garage.) Keep in mind your palette is reddish brown from brick and roof, light gold/tan of walkway and driveway, something people sometimes forget. The brick, roof, and walkway are your "givens."Complementary colors are reddish brown, golden taupes, warm dark taupes and possible green.

@PPF what color did you use to paint the garage door? I Liked it.

BM Cromwell Gray is a great color for your brick.

    I loved that color palette!!

@Yes, I like your mock-up, but that right planting bed could go even deeper.

The other option would be a front yard patio if you live in that kind of neighborhood and you'd get enough use out of it. Some people started to put in front patios during the pandemic to meet with friends outside. They're wonderful!

NO brick or stone added please so I guess the first pic if you must bit I think some good landscping is worth a lot more than spending money on a thing that really is not needed for much since you have an overhang for guests . I might consider a much nicer front door and make that one with sidelights included

I dont like any of the portico's. If the third picture is your actual house, the indented front, is a much better look than any of those porticos. Also, have you picked a new roof color yet. The color of it, now, does nothing for your house. Ask the roofers for solid color roofing shingles, not all those variegations, that are fighting terrible with the brick. A darker color roof would be nicer too.
