Washer/dryer location -- leave it or move it?

last modified: last month

Hey everyone, I am in the midst of a home remodel of a new-to-me home. I recently realized that the location of the washer/dryer will be an issue if I have to park two cars in the garage. I don't think I can open the doors without hitting the car. Currently I only have one car, so it is not an issue. I am wondering if I should leave it as is and deal with it in the future..

One ugly option is to rotate and have them face each other, so I can get washed laundry and turn 180 and deposit into dryer. But I would lose a chunk of space for the doors.

Another option is move it to the upper part of the garage, like the top left corner. That would require rerouting water and gas lines, and creating a new dryer vent outlet. I would lose natural light from the window. And it would be noisy to the adjacent bedroom.

The last option is use the 125 x 121 inch "bedroom" and repurpose it into a laundry room, but then I would lose a bedroom on official records. It also requires routing gas/water lines, and creating a more complex dryer vent. Plus I can't use that room for much else...

What does everyone think? Also, all the cabinets and stuff in the garage is just hypothetical. The gray storage units came with the home, but they look really old and junky, I might just demo it out. Thank you!

Personally, I'd buy smaller units way before considering moving them, with all the associated rerouting of pipes, vents, etc. That sounds like an unnecessarily troublesome and expensive project. Maybe stacked units, so that there's only the width of 1 machine, not 2.

If open to a stackable, you’ll gain some space and saves the expense of moving everything. The width of counter wouldn’t be as deep as machines. With the money saved, you could put the money towards changing the old cabinets.

The room the garage opens to sure seems like a large enough room for the washer dryer and a good mud room location. From what I see you have to walk through a bedroom to get to the garage? I am not sure this is an official bedroom on title but heh you never know I guess. Maybe there is another area for the wash dryer you have not considered if you want to post the full floor plan. IF you remove all the side cabinets car doors will open and the washer dryer is a non issue as it is around the hood area of a vehicle, not the door opening area of a vehicle. You can if you want tape off the floor into a two car garage and put your vehicle on the washer dryer side to try it. Leave it as is unless you want to move them inside the house OR you want it to be a 2 car garage then start by removing all the side wall cabinets so you can open the car doors.

I have just bought a house with a Samsung all in one W/D and I thought I would hate itbut I love it maybe that could be the answer . It looks like no issue in the space though so not sure As always lets see your garage as it is .

The size of the cars/SUVs makes a big difference in how easy or difficult it is to park two cars in a small/tight 2-car garage.

Maybe consider not having shelves on one side? How much stuff do you need to store? Do you really need all that stuff?

Do you need to be able to store your trash barrels in the garage, too?

The washer and dryer are very far forward compared to where the car would go. Try this: Park your current car on that side and see if the passenger side's doors are really a problem after all.

    So...........from your flooring thread......

You live alone?? Three beds, and two baths would ever be an issue?

Wish you folks would stay in ONE thread......?

Leave it for now, get a decent laundry mud up the road........

When the next people will thank you!

    Cryin in the sink lol.....

I bet you will never get two cars in that garage anyway so I wouldn’t bother. We have a two car garage and it fits our minivan, bikes, work bench and storage. Zero chance a second car, of today’s standards would fit in there

I'd leave it for now, since it's just you and it's not a problem. Actually, it's a nice garage! Lots of storage. There is way more room for laundry and storage in your garage than I have in my dedicated laundry space.

I vote to buy stacked when you need to park two cars, keeping the current ones until they need replacing or you get another car.

Thank you for the comments, everyone! I came down with severe URI and was incapacitated for a while so I could not respond in a timely manner. I will leave it as is and worry later like most people say here :)

The garage is pretty empty right now, I just rendered stuff in that I thought would be nice to have lol

So not the real space so how can we really answer but I do agree not to deal with issues not happening .

Your bedroom is not actually a bedroom. No garage can directly enter into a sleeping room. So you better check your tax assessment and figure out what is going on.

It would be very short sighted to spend all the money, effort, and time remodeling and not fix this situation, just because you have 1 car now.

    Sorry @Patricia Colwell Consulting !

It is the real space, though. The door, window, water heater, and plumbing + venting is all in the locations where the washer/dryer is going to be.
