Need a kitchen designer/space planner for a step by step project plan

last month

Hi everyone - looking for some advice, I would like to re-do my kitchen, not all at once but in sort of a layered approach over time, perhaps a year or so. I would like to work with a professional kitchen designer/space planner to determine a layout, budget and suggestions on what can be DIYed and what will need a professional. The kitchen is small, I am not anticipating changing the footprint or getting rid of any walls, the floor has to stay - I need help with a design that will maximize space available and creating the overall look and "feel" -how do I go about this?

I think you are overestimating your options. The layout isn’t bad and if you aren’t moving walls, you probably don’t want to change it. You are going to need new cabinets and probably appliances. Those are going to be the big ticket items and I think you need to choose them together. You aren’t going to put your old countertops back on after replacing the cabinets, so you should do that at the same time, too. So what’s left? Maybe a new light fixture and a backsplash?

Kitchens are almost impossible to do a piece at a time. Demo has to occur for floors and cabinets to be done. Or electrical and plumbing, which need to be updated without stuff in the way. You can’t live for years without floors or cabinets, or safe updated electrical.

Best to just keep a savings account and have the entire household do side hustles to fill it. 80K is the average cost of a full redo, but structural or systems updates can increase that, while DIY labor can decrease it.

Wellll... I know that the cabinets and countertop have to be at one go and most likely the most expensive part, fridge is new but need cooktop, oven and ideas as to where to put a small microwave (not over the stove), plumbing and electrical will not have to be redone, paint and back splash can be done after that and can be DIY, range hood we are on the fence about, window treatments and finishing touches last there is a pantry closet of to the side in the hallway - would love to put cabinets and a counter there and leave it open instead - that is a separate project. I think it can be done in stages after the cabinets are in - but need help with the planning and budget.

In many areas of the US, doing anything much to the kitchen triggers the requirement for compliance with current electrical and plumbing codes. Review your current codes online to plan for the changes and budget accordingly.

Will you be adding a dishwasher?

A small countertop microwave can be moved to an open shelf with electrical outlet eventually.

A vent hood with exhaust outside may be required in some areas. It is usually a good idea. Look at Broan/Nutone for a wide range of options.

Ikea cabs could be a good option - you can use their planner and start with new cabs and appliances, I’d use butcher block for inexpensive counters then add backsplash etc down the road.

A measured floor plan of your space (including the pantry) would be really helpful. Putting the microwave in the pantry (if possible) would be great, since you don't have a lot of counter space. A range instead of wall oven would give you more counter space.

I use Ikea a lot and love them so the budget often drives that choice .The plannigncan all be done before hand but a kitchen redo is a bite the bullet and demolish and expect to have 3 months of disaster before it is done I love Ikea becuase during that time I can put the cabinets together and all be ready to go. I can use a door for all kinds i[pof choices for paint, flooring etc . IMO the fridge was a bad choice in such a samll space and I agree a range just a huge space saver in a small room Your lighting will need a huge redo to get right . The bones of a home IMO all need work before the pretty stuff. If induction is a plan your electrical will need to be checked for sure . Is the floor real wood or vinyl ? If you post a to scale plan of the space on graph paper you willmget a lot of free advice here. Take what is given and use what is useful and ignore the rest . My advic elisten to the pros here . Do the plan to scale show only the empty space incluse thta pantry are too. Post the paln here in jepg format in a comment . All things related to this post dealt with in comments here from now on Show windows , doorways where those lead too.
