Need piece to complement existing furniture

last month
last modified: last month

Love my CENTURY Cashmere line tables (for those who know the brand). Redoing the room but need a complimentary piece... a sideboard or bookcase. I'm really looking for something transitional or Farmhouse glam. Is there a piece that would fit with these tables?? Wood floors going to be a blonde natural oak. Photos below.

Your room appears right out of the 90s. Maybe it's time to view it with a more critical eye. Scarf valances haven't been trending for 30 years.

I agree that those pieces from Century are keepers but perhaps there is a better way to arrange the furniture in this room. You have the pieces in two different finishes. What type of finish were you considering for the sideboard?

The end table is too tall for the sofa/arm next to it. Maybe it would be better placed in the bay window with the lounge chairs?

I would not mess with the beautiful finishes on the highly styled tables. Stripping and refinishing would not go well with wood that has been pickled.

I would also consider removing the ivy under the console table (another 90s trend).

OK. If you'd like some assistance, I need to see the room.

Shoot the photos with the phone turned horizontal.

The floor was pickled....in the 90,s! The entire room is getting a refresh including the floors... i just want to save those furniture pieces. The coffee table has some staining and is a solid pc i dont want to part with(needs refinishing) . The cabriole legged pieces are very dated but were thousands of dollars in the 90's and are in perfect condition... hate to get rid off ( but if i have to, i will.) I feel the curved legs dont match any of todays furniture straight lined styles. There will be No ivy, no scarf valance, no wall unit staying. The room is a step down from our great room so its out of sight out of mind allll these years.

Will not do repeat of red oak. going to stick with a light white oak floor.

The room is a 14 x 24 with 2 step down walk into

Was grandchildrens toy area. NO more. Photos look alot larger than it is. I like a farmhouse glam but not with alot of rustic features. Does that make sense?

OK so that's a lovely room. I have downloaded the pictures and will see what options might be.

Can I please have the general dimensions?

I think placing your seating at right angles to one another works best for your space. It allows that Century end table to work successfully at the intersection of the sofa and loveseat. I think you can use just about every item you already own and have a successful outcome.

There's a good location for the wood frame chair . It will need a small round accent table placed next to it.

Your room requires lamps. Now there's a place for a table lamp on the end table and a floor lamp in the space at the end of the sofa.

I'm assuming your original request was due to you wanting to get rid of the entertainment unit. I think that's a good idea. It will make the room more spacious in appearance. Mount the larger TV screen on the wall above a floating unit or place it on top of a sideboard.

The curved leg pieces would be pretty glam painted black.

Your room will take on a completely different appearance if you change all your R Bulbs to LED PAR Bulbs. Your furniture will appear newer, I promise. The bulb you select depends in the diameter of the housing in the ceiling. Sometimes that manufacturer includes a label inside the can telling you what bulbs will fit.

These are PAR bulbs. As bulbs go they are not cheap but you'll never have to ever replace them again.

You currently have R bulbs in your fixtures, and your lighting makes the appearance of your room look 'fuzzy'.

I'm sure you can find a number of other media cabinets for the room. These are just a few I found quickly.

If you need to store toys in the area, consider a minimal wall hung media cabinet for the TV and place the credenza /sideboard in the back wall to store toys.

Wow. Beverly just gave you a complete design plan. Keep us posted on the changes as you go.

Wow... I think I would go with option 2 because I want to see the console/sideboard from the other room where it would be situated between the two windows. There is NO television by the way. That wall for the console between the 2 windows is just under 8 feet. Wall unit wall is 10-1/2 feet . wide angle bay window is 11.5 feet wide. large century console is 36" tall which is pretty high. Now to pick a floor color that compliments the reddish English Walnut. Sometimes its red and sometimes its more mahogany brown. Do you think the curved legs on my Century pieces match a straight lined wall piece along with the coffee table with all those carvings? but you said the end table is too tall26". What color to make that? I will definitely change those light bulbs. I have yet to change one in 30 years. Thats how often we are in that room. Would it look nicer to just put a runner rug in front of the console instead of covering up the beautiful natural wood floor Im putting down? Thank you so much everyone!

would love to accent in that blackish color. Maybe one wall?? thoughts?

The room could use some updating as someone else mentioned. Would agree that you get rid of the valance over the window. Am not a fan of the end table being higher than the coffee table. If they end and coffee tables were refinished to be the same that would go a way towards making the room more cohesive.

This look (ignore coffee table) would be achievable with your tables finished to match. Accessory choices are also so important.

I’m not a pro and like mixing styles and woods so I‘m not be the best person to advise. You have to decide which way to go, as achieving transitional won’t suit these tables if not comfortable using other styles. Consider selling tables, giving you more leeway in being able to achieve the transitional look you want. Since you are already adding a more modern piece, look for tables that suit.

There's no problem mixing and matching legs so don't give that another thought for now.

I would advise you take a few minutes over the weekend and move the furnishings into the layout in Option 2 leaving the wall unit exactly where it is for the time being. Then photograph the new layout so we can evaluate how successful or not successful the new layout is.

Tambour works great with Cabriolet. Choose a piece that does not have legs, but sits right on the floor.

Or go with the tambour and a completely different leg.

Either the black or natural with the iron base would work well.

You selected a dark oak for the room next door. I don't understand how you can do anything but match that finish on your pickled floor.

@JUDY GRAHAM the stretcher on the Century cabriole legged pieces are a taupey dark brown colored metal. If I try to match to wood of those wouldnt it be too many light colors? floor, console, end table. None of them would match exactly.

@BeverlyFLADeziner I think you did not understand my original post. I did not select a dark oak. My whole house is a dark brown/red wood. The step down living room was pickled in 1990 and it is getting ripped out. I do not want to choose the dark brown/red wood for that separate room. I do not like the rest of the house but Im not redoing the whole house again. It has the skinny planks too. I prefer wider planks like a 4 or 5" in a more natural tone color (not dark as you posted in a drawing picture).

WE DESTROYED THE WALL UNIT. ITS GONE!

    from right entrance

    from the left entrance

Honestly I prefer the wall that is between the 2 windows to have a sideboard or console. It would be visible and the focal point from the doorway. Maybe that wall can have a dark paint accent wall?? The wall where the unit was is very empty now.

You can beef up the importance of the wall between the windows with items and textures. You don't need an accent wall, you need accents. If you place the sideboard between the windows and then art over top, that is all you have on that wall.

The reason I like the sofa on that wall is because you have baseboard heat, and since sofas should be about 6 inches away from a wall, this allows the necessary air flow for your baseboards.

Besides moving the sofa away from the wall, I'd move the rug and loveseat a bit more off the area rug so that your conversation space has some breathing room. Right now everything seems jammed together and it's not necessary because you have the room.

Please post a picture of the bare wall where the wall unit was positioned.

See how the curved legs of your end table are no longer an issue now that they are hidden behind the sofa and the loveseat. That coffee table will look even better when it out standing on its own.

I would like a new tambour styled sideboard with tall accessories between the windows. there is a sofa in the upper room so I dont really want to see another full display of another sofa from the doorway. OPTION #1 Arm chair staying but the 2 dated club chairs at bay window Im getting rid of. Not sure if I like the idea of different chairs in one area.

Not sure if the space between the two entrances is as large as the space from the end of the drapery panels to the end of the drapery panels. That is the amount of space required to accommodate the sofa, loveseat etc. I drew it up like there was enough space, but the drawing is not to scale.

BTW I think your furnishings could work with a fluted sideboard but not a tambour sideboard. The fluting is similar to the detail on the frieze on your coffee table and end table.

For between the windows, I like the black piece because it goes to the floor. No competing legs. How about this art over top with just a touch of the color of the furniture and works with the wall color.

@JUDY GRAHAM The wall color is going to change. Its an entire room refresh! Floors, walls, curtains, accessories sofa and loveseat. The only items im considering keeping are the two fancy cashmere cabriole pieces (very tall console and lamp table) and the coffee table. I dont believe all three go together. Coffee table I would refinish in another stain color.

You are right @BeverlyFLADeziner. What about the way I had the seating originally. sofa and love seat facing each other but not against the wall and a console/sideboard can still go on that wall? I can still kind of cover the baseboard on the bottom.

What is everyones thought on getting a sofa and 2 chairs in the conversational section instead of a loveseat. i can put a bench in the bay window area.

    what kind of window treatment?

I just found out that the sofa I picked out does not have a matching loveseat. Do I do two chairs or pick a totally different love seat

Spent $35 and changed all the light bulbs to LEDs and I see absolutely no change at... all no difference.
