Rug Dilemia in Primary Bedroom

Hi everyone! My husband and I recently purchased a new home, and our primary bedroom has enough space for both a king bed and a separate sitting area. I’d love some advice on rug sizing and placement to keep the room balanced and cohesive.

Aesthetically, I’ll be mixing textures and using complementary colors and styles. My goal is for the space to feel layered and intentional—not covered wall-to-wall with rugs. We are refinishing the floors in Bona Natural, and I want to preserve some of the beautiful wood flooring to give the room breathing space.

Right now, I’m considering an 8x10 rug under the bed, with the nightstands sitting just off the carpet. My hesitation is about the sitting area—if I use another 8x10 rug there, I’m worried it could overwhelm the room. But if I go smaller, I’m concerned about the rugs feeling mismatched or the spacing between them and the walls feeling uneven.

Has anyone found a good balance for this kind of layout? I’d love to see photos or hear ideas on how to make two separate rugs feel cohesive within one large, open bedroom.

Would love to hear some design ideas for this space!

Congrats on your new house.

For this room, first figure out function, then layout, then rugs. Then order everything. Get the bed in and live with it for a while, using some other furniture you already own for seating and see how you like this layout.

Have you had a bedroom with seating area before and if so did you use it? I know a lot of people who never use the seating area of their bedrooms. Who will sit here and when?

Could you put your bed on the door wall and the seating near the balcony - or would that feel too tight getting to the bathroom? (I'd want to sit by the open doors if possible.)

Would you use the seating area more if there were a long chaise lounge and reading light? Who is going to sit across from you in this room in a chair with their back to the window? Is this space more realistically used for dressers and dressing area?

Suggest waiting until all of your furniture is in place before purchasing rugs. Don’t line up as that’s the issue.

Your concern below won’t happen if far apart/not lined up and different sizes and/or being mismatched can actually define the areas, creating more interest.

Sitting area: Consider comfy chairs/table by the windows, with a rug just large enough to ground that area and on wall opposite, add large art or even an electric fireplace at some point. It will be a more cozy retreat and not feel like a living room (ie: couch and two chairs centered in room).

I would not buy any furniture other than a bed and nightstands ... then live in the house for at least 6 months. I don't know anyone that sits in these master bedroom sitting areas. I have a comfortable chair in mine that is used to hold bed pillows and we have a treadmill in there, which does get used.

I would want a walk-in closet in the master suite, so I would be looking at how to reconfigure the space by adding a nice sized walk-in closet.

I would much prefer the bed facing the windows and the seating area on the other side or a dressing area or whatever. I would reconfigure the closets too. And the entry to them.
