HELP! STARTING OVER.Should I install a FLARED SKIRT or something else?

HELP! WE ARE HAVING TO START OVER SO I WANT TO DO IT RIGHT. We are REMOVING THE WHITE BELLY BAND AND CORNER TRIM. Should I install a FLARED SKIRT or something else where Hardie- board SHINGLE SIDING transitions to brick? Looking for advice on flashing and drip edge when installing Hardie-board shingle siding above brick. I want to make sure we are water-proof but also maintain original "colonial/cottage" style of our 1960s family home.

I would love the real cedar, but husband disagrees. Do I need a RAIN SCREEN AND BUG SCREEN? How about a copper Drip Edge? Thoughts? Thanks!
