Paint color help for entryway in rustic farmhouse

last month

Hello! We’ve been in our home for 7 months now and although I love the rustic charm of all the wood, and don’t plan to change it(!), I am looking for ideas to update the painted part of our entryway. Something bothers me about the white paint on the walls and doors with the wood trim. I would love advice on whether I should 1) paint the trim white (just around the closet doors in entry and the 1/2 bath (single door), 2) paint the white walls and doors a color (thinking a green/gray?) and leave the wood trim, or 3) paint the white walls and trim for a color wash?? Or other ideas? I would love help on choosing a color. Attaching pics of the entry area, and 1 of the adjoining living room while we love (but yes, I’m still working on curtains and artwork.. work in progress!) Many thanks!!!

I would paint the entry way a BM Slate Teal or even lighter and more muted like your door mat.

  • last month

Earth tones. A muted green would be nice.

I would strip the paint off the doors so that they can be stained to match the trim and think about what color you want walls.

    Wood doors?

Wallpaper mural, making the closet doors large art pieces?

Honestly I would change the trim to white. Not sure on wall colour. I think wood can be the star in places where wood is everywhere but doesn’t need to be on trim too if you don’t love it

I love the wood! The problem I see is that the white is too bright white and is too much contrast. The look needs to be softened.

I love green paint colors with wood, but for a whole home or the main areas of the home I would be more likely to go with a neutral and use the greens in bedrooms, bathrooms, and other rooms that are not the main public rooms. (My preference, not necessarily right or wrong).

Kylie M did a video showing a bunch of colors with golden oak. It will give you some ideas for neutrals that could work with your wood.

If it were my home I would probably paint the dark wood trim around the doors a white and the walls a light neutral. I would need to play with some different lighter to light mid tone neutrals to find what I fell in love with). I always pick my white after my neutral so that I get the right white to work with the neutral.

Watch the video and give us some clues to what appeals to you.

Do you have any pics of your kitchen? Just wanting to make sure our guidance doesn't back you into anything that doesn't work with the kitchen.

Thanks Jennifer!! We are going to completely gut the kitchen so it won’t matter 😁 Actually we plan to swap the dining room and kitchen locations!
I love Kylie M! Thank you. And good point about neutrals. I tend to agree for main living areas. But also like color and there is a lot of brown over here!!🤪

The white is too bright. Try another more muted color for the walls and doors and keep the trim.

I am not a huge wood wall lover but thta trim on the doors needs to go or strip the doors and let them be wood . I lobve this color for walls from BM I usually cut it 25% for hint of color , it woorks really well with all wood tones and IMO a true neutral. I see nothing o drive me to a dark wall color at all

The trim, especially around the closets, looks too skinny and dark in relation to the expanse of bright white door.

I agree, overall the white is too bright.

I would look to that stone in the fireplace for inspiration, and try to pull a mid- to light tone neutral from there to coordinate. I would probably paint the trim, and switch out the door hardware for something dark.

    Very nice house :)

Most of the time I'm on the side of painting wood, but in this case, like a few others have mentioned, I would strip those doors back to their wood finish or buy new wood doors.

If you paint the trim, then you get into issues where the door trim meets the baseboard ... you would be opening another whole can of worms!

  • last month

To be honest I would paint the baseboards too. I would want all trim and baseboards white or not wood.

  • last month

Planning on gutting the kitchen - I would probably wait to decide on the wall color till you know what you want to do with the kitchen. You will have the wood floors, the wood walls, the fireplace and the elements that you pick for the kitchen that are all going to have to work well with the neutral you pick for the remaining wall space.

Cabinets and countertops come in fewer colors than paint.

  • last month

If you notice the wood baseboards where the walls are wood are different than the baseboards where the walls are currently white. I would keep the wood baseboards as they are where I had the wood on the walls, but change to white trim around the doors and white baseboards where the walls are white.

It is okay to mix baseboards in this situation where we have very different wall treatments.

Thank you all! It’s funny, this house is a bit schizophrenic… some trim is painted (family room/office is cobalt blue!) and some isn’t..!

I love the idea of Healing Aloe in the entryway. So soothing.

I don't have software but here is a rough sketch to visualize. Keep the trim into the living room wood. Keep the baseboards wood. Door trim and doors, walls Healing Aloe.

I would extend the look for the wrap around walls and door where the console table is.

Thank you all! Love all the ideas. I actually used SW Silver Strand in my last house and loved it. Similar to Healing Aloe! A little bit more greyed.
Also, this is my current dining room. I love the wall color. It’s a light blue. And trim is painted white! And since I’ll be moving the dining room next to the entry (swapping with kitchen in the next 1-2 years), I might want to go with a slightly bluer color to go with this rug. Any suggestions on similar colors? If not I’ll try to match this blue! Thanks all!

I know we are in this world where everyone wants a white house with black windows and white walls with white cabinets and a not too busy countertop and hardwood floors and color anywhere other than throw pillows is taboo, but really, it is okay to be different.

If the house feels schizophrenic you may want to try to create a whole home color palette and develop a harmonious flow from room to room, but that doesn't mean every room has to be the same.

I saved this photo because I loved how the owners flipped the colors of trim and walls between the two rooms

The two rooms broke the rules for same flooring throughout and same trim throughout but still feel really harmonious.

  • last month

Jennifer- I love those rooms! That is 10000% my color… I may have to steal that!
Yea I love color. My last house had color but definitely flowed and was purposeful. We’re not quite there in this house. But I have a vision!! And I actually love all the wood. It’s so cozy and warm. And my colors are cool (blues/greens) so that fits perfectly. Other than my hideous kitchen (which will be demo’d), the entry area is the only ‘room’ that has been driving me nuts. The upstairs hall is the same. White walls and doors with the wood trim. So I’ll start with the entryway. And go from there room by room over the years! This is all hugely helpful! And I’ll be back for more advice!

I bought a home that wasn't updated since it was built in the late 60s. Still had gold and black velvet wallpaper in the bathroom - complete with carpet that the elderly man soaked with urine. Loved the bones of the house, but lots of updates needed. I spent the first few years de-landscaping and de-decorating and fixing the necessitates (new HVAC, Hot Water Heater, fridge, freezer, range, updating lighting and electric, treating for termites, replacing a double sliding glass door that had leaked and rotted the support beams under it, removing the old pink toilet and tub . . . now I am starting on the more fun stuff. I too love color - but want it to flow and not look like someone threw up a box of crayons.

You have blue with white trim in the Dining room, you could match the color scheme in the entry areas until you remodel. Easy enough with the small amount of painting.

I just looked at all the baseboards and trim to see how I could do it… may be tough but this is how they transitioned from dining room (white paint) to living room (wood)… is this right? Here’s photos in entry way too. Thx Jennifer and tracefloyd!
And Jennifer, we call my sister Skittles… you can imagine her house! Although it’s cute, she loves color 😄

  • last month

Oh this house is so interesting! Now that I see the trim closer Im waffling on painting it.

  • last month

It is really nice rustic (rough) trim!
I hate to paint wood. But… I really dislike the trim and white doors. I could try painting the doors dark or swap for wood.. start there and see how it goes. Hmmmm 🤔

  • last month

And yes, this house is soooo interesting. I love the nuances even though some drive me nuts 😆

I love wood and am usually the person who screams "Don't paint that wood!", but there are exceptions. When I look at your dining room I cannot imagine that it would look as nice with dark trim.

It also doesn't sit within an area that has the wood paneled walls.

I do like the wood door with the wood trim in the front entry.

getting matching wood doors for the closets may be challenging.

Maybe something with less contrast than the bright white walls, or even the very light teal walls would work well.

I just played with a few greens in the Clary Sage and Comfort Gray families, using lighter and darker colors and a warmer white just to give you a feel for some different options without painting the trim.

Given this is your front entrance/first impression and since the expanse of the doors have a such huge influence, consider the big picture.

It’s important to work with the flooring and since you like green, an earthy mid range shade won’t feel jarring or darken the space. It’s warmth will work nicely with the trim, eliminating the need to paint, therefore not breaking up the flow into adjoining rooms. Adding molding and new handles will make them look custom and importantly, break up the flat expanse.

To make sense of the green, add a complementary rug and inject some green in adjacent room.

Thank you Maureen and Jennifer! Love these ideas. So helpful.

Do you think wood doors (if I could get them) would be better vs painting them? Or just paint? Eventually I want to move our front door there! But that’s probably years away..

    Thanks!!

  • last month

I think more wood will feel cave like.

  • last month

I think I would like wood doors, but I am not sure if it would cross over to the "Too much wood" spectrum.

To make my decision I would probably attempt to provide myself with a way to visualize things prior to purchasing new doors.

I would start with picking the wall color. Paint a section next to the closets with a sample jar of paint.

Then I would use brown paper and cover the doors. Not exactly wood - but close enough to give you a feeling of how dark it will be.

I would simply paint the baseboards and the trim on the doors the same colour as the walls/doors.

  • last month

Often painted surfaces help the wood that's there really shine ✨

  • last month

Thank you all! Well, I have my answer. ChatGPT showed me wood… when though not quite what I would get, it’s a definite no. Waaaay too much wood. So I’ll start with painting the doors, then maybe walls, then maybe trim if needed. Thanks so much!!

  • last month

I also need semi flush mount lights… one for inside the entry. One just above this rug. Matching. Something farmhouse or vintage? I’d be thrilled with any recs! Thx!!
