Halloween has always been a time for sewing costumes for DH, myself, our children, their friends and now our grandson.

Up till now the costumes have been fairly straight forward...well except for the year DD and her friend wanted to be a pair of pants i.e. on person for each leg but I digress.

This year grandson decided he want to be Derpy Tiger from K Pop Demon Hunters i.e. no pattern available. I started the project just after Labor and finally finished last night. The suit and tail were fairly straight forward but the head not so much.

Here's a quick synopsis:

Finding the fur cloth. With no Joann Fabrics, I resorted to ordering on line. The fur I ordered was way too long, so DD and I used hair clippers to shave it down to a more manageable fur length. This was a two day adventure. There was blue fur all over our back lawn!

The suit and tail

I found a vintage Simplicity pattern for the suit and tail. Unfortunately it was the wrong size so I had to reduce it down. For the inside of the tail, I used pipe insulation and mechanics wire so the tail could be bent and shaped.

The head was a challenge.

DGS is autistic so he did not want anything covering his face. A hood would have been so much easier. Instead, I built the head on a baseball cap. To make matters worse, there are just a few pictures of Derpy Tiger as he was shown just a few times in the movie so I had to take some creative license. The head was built with foam and batting covered with fur. The features were felt, paint, permanent marker and ping pong balls for some of the eye parts.

Sewing machine blues

I have two sewing machines a Singer Featherweight from 1934 and a "newer" Singer that is ony 42 years old. Due to the weight of the material, I had to battle constant issue with tension and bobbin side thread bird nesting. I ended up using both machines.

DGS was thrilled with the results. (I am more critical as the craftsmanship is not a quality sewing project. LOL). Happy Halloween!
