Curtains or not?

Hello,

We just installed these beautiful windows in our living room. Is it possible to get curtains that are only drawn occasionally that don't hide the window features? In other words, the natural light, the view of our front yard, and window details are so nice I don't want to cover them but there are occasions where I want the windows to conceal the indoors (for when we are out of town).

What could we get away with that serves both purposes?

Thank you,

R

Top down bottom up blinds that sit on the bottom sill most of the time.

Yes, I thought of that because I have them in my bathroom and really love them, but was hoping for a softer look with curtains.

What's out front? Do you need the privacy from passerby or neighbors? If not, then no curtains. Those windows are too beautiful to cover if you don't have to, and I think curtains or any type of blind is going to detract from them.

Out front is our pretty front yard, and we have plenty of privacy so curtains aren't necessary. Why am I feeling like the windows need something more? I think it's because every window in the house is bare.

It seems you have some space for stack back but what a shame to cover those . I guess I understand the reason when you are awy so maybe something that can just be there for that reason . Maybe something like no screws needed roller blinds that just use a tension bar type install nothing to ruin the frmae or anything but cover the windows

curtain panels that sit stacked back against the wall most of the time might work, I’d want a more simple rod, maybe a french return - if it were me, I’d get panels there were close to the wall color so they added softness and texture but not a lot of competition with the windows - you might need 4 panels (2 each side) so they don’t seem skimpy on the lovely, chunky windows

Beautiful windows! I wouldn't do any sort of shades, since they would cover part of the windows. You have enough room to mount curtain panels high up and stack back just beyond the window casings. This would allow the windows to be seen but have the softness of a curtain.

    something like this:

Place the curtain rod between the window casing and the ceiling so you don't cover any of the top molding. And covering a part of the side moldings isn't bad.

I love that idea! Thanks for providing the photo- now I can visualize that working in my space.

I agree with Diana - and the way to make it really functional would be to consider traverse style so you don’t have to stand or crawl on the sofa if you ever plan on closing them. It’s more $ for sure but so nice. Cold winter nights might make you want to close them up every night.

Side note - if you ever are thinking of a new coffee table - consider a round one for ease of maneuvering and to make everything look a bit less boxy.

There isn’t enough width on either side for drapes wide enough to cover the entire window, so will overlap by quite a bit. For any treatment though opening/closing will be interesting with sectional there. Maybe bottom up blinds is the answer.

If sectional could go elsewhere, the windows will be more appreciated even partially covered by drapes.

We have complete privacy but prefer to cover our windows at night. It just feels cozier. Our roman shades are from Select Blinds and are easy to install and are cord free. I measured using their online instructions and installed them myself. They have a tension rod at the top to secure them. No drilling required. They are inside mounted and require a couple inches of depth on your window frame. Plenty of fabrics to choose from and more affordable than others brands. And the best part is you don't have to hide your beautiful windows.

On a different note, is it possible to move the pendant lights so that each one is centered to the window behind it? unless its the picture angle, tgey looks slightly off right now.

I know- it bothers me that we can't center them. When you're in the space it's not even noticeable really, but very noticeable in the photos.

Thank you all so much for your ideas- much appreciated!

No curtains but can you move the sofa away from the windows a couple of feet so as to see them better?

    Lisedv's rendering look very nice.

Lisedv thank you for that rendering! I think I'm going to move forward with that kind of look.

I would agree with the celluar shade option and top down/bottom up , as the first to answer suggested. They can be there when you want them and stack into a small stack when you dont.

No matter how nice your windows are, there is always a creepy feeling that someone can be out there looking in and you cant see them. That can be unsettling.

But those shades are the best! I love that I can adjust them to block what I want, or just make them almost hide in plan site.

I do see the sun shining bright outside the window, so you must have some sun coming in that you might want to have some control over.

I find the height the curtains are hung in Lisedv's rendering takes away from the windows. That horrid black rod hung so high makes your eye go straight up past the beautiful wood trim. Please hang it just above so as not to draw attention to a curtain rod!!! Not only when you are gone but probably when you entertain you will want the windows covered. You will find at night your windows become huge black holes that suck all the light from the room.

I like the symmetry of the three beautiful window frames, esp. with your contemporary furnishings. With lisdevs rendering they take away from that feeling. would opt for inside mount cellular blinds...ultimate configuration sunlight/privacy control.

I don't have software but here is a sketch for concept top down bottom up:
