Furniture & Rug Layout Design - Seeking Help

last month
last modified: last month

If possible, please avoid ignoring my question below and the info provided. Only focused on furniture/rug layout/arrangements in LR/DR, not looking to do an expensive remodel or paint.

Context: We need a rug(s) now. We'd ideally select all furniture, but can't do that at this time, however we'd like to come up with a long-term vision for how our furniture will be arranged, to help inform the rug(s) we buy now. Some furniture in the photos we will keep. All photos/dimensions will be provided now + other posts (due to limits).

Style: MCM(ish), BOHO, Minimalist, really want to allow space and the nature outside influence the feel inside. Generally lean towards cooler colors, although love to mix/balance both. We like to entertain large family gatherings at time (18+ people), have kids and a dog.

Question: When looking at the options below, which do you like most + why?

Question: Are other configurations you'd recommend + why?

1st photo is full house upstairs dimensions.

2nd photo is current configuration (2 couches + 2 chairs, small rug).

Option 1: 3rd Photo is option 1: 8x16 rug and 3 couches. - This is more expensive due to a custom sized 8x16 rug.

Option 2: 4th Photo is option 2: Two 5x7 rugs and 3 couches. More affordable than a custom sized rug, but not easy to figure out which 2 rugs to get - - - different colors/patterns?

Option 3: 5th Photo is option 3: 8x16 custom size rug + one extra long couch vs. 3 couches.

Option 4: 6th Photo is option 4: 12x16 rug (not custom, so more affordable), major difference is some of the couches/furniture is ALL the way on the rug, others not.

Option 5: 7th Photo is option 5: 12x16 rug with extra long couch vs. 3 couches.

Full Layout (Above)

Current Furniture Layout

Option 1: Custom 8x16 rug + 3 couches

Option 2: Two 5x7 rugs (can be different) + 3 couches

Option 3: Large custom rug + XL Couch

Option 4: 12x16 Rug + 3 Couches

Option 5: 12 x 16 rug w/ XL Long Couch

Option 6: Another option we've not considered?

@BeverlyFLADeziner - thanks for offering a design. I’m unsure the furniture pieces are correctly sized relative to the space. For example, right now we have a 3-seater sofa and it looks like the one you’ve included is over 10 feet long. Same with the chairs/table, they don’t appear sized for the space. Is there a standard that’s used? I created the diagram using shapes/lines, not a standard tool to create diagrams.

You’ve also reduced the amount of seating proposed compared to all of the 5 options I included.

Do you not like any of the options I included?

Do you have any suggestions regarding the rug size/layout?

    Thanks!

The options you’ve laid out all feel awkward to me. They seem to be desperate to fill Tue space with more furniture but not in a comfortable way. The space looks really nice and big but you don’t need to fill all corners of it with furniture. In a room like yours the furniture should float in the room with wide aisles behind it.

Our room isn’t perfect by any means but it’s larger than yours at 19x22 and this is our layout. Beverly’s layout suits your room.

19x22 is smaller than our room, unless you mean only the space not used for dining?

Appreciate the feedback just the same. In option 3 we have significantly more space due to the XL couch and slimmer rug.

It’s true that we currently have a couch with its back up against the wall. I’ve considered pulling it out, but then the additional space loss in the middle + non-functioning space behind the couch there seems odd.

Will try to think more about a floating design. Not opposed to less furniture, but at the same time, only one couch in there will make it feel odd/very empty.

The challenge with Beverly’s design is that the furniture I. Her design are significantly larger than they are in real life. That could per her design is more than 11 ft based on it’s proportion to the room, yet it show’s 3 seats - so it’s just not sized correctly relative to the room dimensions - which is why I’m wondering if there’s a standard scale everyone uses, because if there is, this isn’t using it - I created it manually on a digital whiteboard.

Im referring to your living room space not your entire open concept main floor.

Try floating what you have. I don’t think Beverly is showing anything extra large.

If you take her couch and place it next to mine in the diagram it will be much larger, even though mine is actually 3 seats. Same with her chairs.

After researching with AI, my assumption is correct, there is a fixed common scale “Common architectural scales” - in contrast, the diagram I created was done so by me using a digital white board, taking measurements + eyeballing it, making adjustments, etc. and this is why Beverly’s furniture is much larger relative to the space it’s placed in within the diagram - she was probably using standard furniture icons from some designer software that’s aligned with the aforementioned standards.

I’ll redo a new diagram using software.

Literally rearrange your space and see if you like it. No software needed.

Maybe refer back to my op (we don’t have the rugs/furniture - only some). The point of this is to try and come up with a layout before buying an expensive rug and consider various options.

I know what the original post says. I’m aware this is about rug size. I also see you plan to get furniture over time. I assume you won’t be tossing out what you have in the meantime time though and do plan to keep it for now. So float the existing furniture in a shape like Beverly has suggested and then tape out on the floor a big rug and get a sense for of this is how the space light work well for you.

Lovely room with all the natural light! i like @BeverlyFLADeziner layout because it pulls the seating in toward each other for comfortable conversation - otherwise folks are shouting across the void. Side tables with lamps would make it cozy at night

I would also love a set of comfy swivel chairs right by the window for AM coffee and PM drinks but that’s me

IMO you buythe rug after the furniture to solve all these issues. AI is in no way a design tool at this time , maybe someday. Pieces theat fit on paer often do not work in real life traffic patterens are a thing hard to change so think about those , Your spaces right now have feel of home IMO so there is no way to choose a rug without the furniture and that feeling of your vibe in a space . I suggest you stop crowd sourcing and get a good interior designer to help but no rug until you have got the pieces arranged how you like thme for how you use the space . There iar emany ways to have furniture off the walls to create a much nicer feel to aroom and nothing wrong with some free space .I do not find any of the options you post right . I like Beverly's layout but if you continue to argue about pieces with no clue to us about what pieces this cannot be solved here . You have huge space which needs to be cozier for real life , Get the darn furniture you like then come back to choose a rug

@Patricia Never said I was using AI to design or “arguing about pieces” (was simply calling out the size ratio between furniture and room in their design didn’t add up - if a design includes chairs the size of couches and couches the size of beds it prob won’t look like it does in the layout when set up in reality) and like the OP reads, we can’t wait to get all the furniture now, and need rugs.

@Tejjy Inc., Thank you for the guidance. Based on the space dimensions I provided, any thoughts on what size rug may be ideal?

One thing to note is in my diagram, the DR table shown is actually the size of the rug w/ the table on it, if that makes sense - given that we’re not right now planning to replace that.

We also do like open space, room for light to come through the room from diff windows, but also want to maximize seating in balance with the open space. Essentially we’re trying to get as much seating and space and light flowing through, while making it easy for people to converse/move around, feel positive.

Hi @Tejjy inc., what do you think of this new proposed layout + photo. In the space where we had the couch up against the wall we'll add a shelf unit there, possibly white oak and somewhat minimalist or maybe even some kind of built-in, not really sure just yet. One thing to note in this layout we only have 2 couches, which does limit seating for large gatherings, however in those situations I assume we'll just use folding chairs for additional seating + the dining room table, kitchen area, and other rooms (family room downstairs).
