really messed up our master bathroom

Hello!

I really messed up on the scale of things in our master bathroom. Everything is very crowded. I’d like to replace my mirrors, faucets, and sconces. Would love help brainstorming my path forward so I don’t mess this up again.

If you replace the mirrors with smaller ones, everything else will look fine!

That is the best news I’ve heard all day!

I don’t mind it as is. I would maybe remove the middle sconce.

It looks lovely. Sit with it for a while.

I think it's nice! I'd live with it for a while. Maybe switch out the faucets for a lower profile; I think those high ones tend to get water all over and look a little like a kitchen type instead.

You need to get that outlet shifted over to the left, so you can get taller mirrors that can be place a bit lower down.

    ^ agree, an easy change

Agree with chispa’s comment re the outlet. I’m not fond of the gooseneck (?) faucets, are they returnable for a lower profile?

I actually really think it’s quite nice as is. But if I were to make a change it would be as chispa recommended and have longer mirrors

I think the elements are pretty except for the sconces which look bare, like the lights need some sort of glass cover. They look too modern for your traditional aesthetic. They also look like they are mounted too high. Ideally, you could remove the middle sconce and install a lower profile faucet.

Thank you guys! These are much easier fixes than I expected. I was worried to remove that middle sconce but I think that will help my crowding issue. I also agree about a lower profile faucet, I have buyer’s remorse. The sconces have a light shade, as pictured.

You have a nice airy space! A few minor and relatively inexpensive tweaks may gladden your eyes.
Try this:move outlet farther to the left.
align mirrors so bottom edges touch the backsplash.
leave the taps! A high arc is so handy for small wash/rinsing of baby stuff.
    leave the sconces!
These small adjustments can make a big difference without breaking your wallet.

How wide and tall are the current mirrors?

  • PRO

    The current mirrors are 24x40!

I wonder if the current mirrors are a fine size but need to be lowered as do Tue sconces.

    We do have similar sconces.

@shasta what are the width of these mirrors?

It's a pretty bathroom and you're almost there! I'd remove the middle sconce, move the outlet to the left (to just outside the countertop) and move the mirrors lower, which will also give a little more room to breathe between the mirrors and outside sconces. I think the high arc faucets look great and you should keep them. I also think 40" tall is fine for the mirrors, as I've measured that exact thing a lot lately for one short person and one tall person, one regular height and one extra height vanity, for baths with 10' ceilings. Then stand back and live with it a couple of days...it'll either feel balanced and right or worst case you might decide to move the outside sconces a little lower (then patch all the drywall at once.) :-) Your fixtures are nice and I don't think you need to replace anything, just tweak placement.,

    24"

Thank you Beverly! I appreciate that!

Two things I noticed right away that Beverly mentioned…height of sconces and large back plates. Easy fixes.

I would remove the middle sconce and lower the other 2 sconces which seem a bit too high.

I'm also showing faucets with shorter necks.

Lower placed sconces.....Shorter faucets!! as all noted. If you like the three sconce effect and may also NEED the light?

Narrow the mirrors to 20" wide by 45"h

That few inches won't diminish your view at all, will lessen a crowded feel.

    Move that GFI left.......

No more than a 3" gap bottom of mirror to riser is necessary.

(I'd have turned the receptacle to its long down side, and cut in right INTO a 6" tall counter riser if the top was solid, but moving left will let it just "disappear" into the paint) and really there should be another gfi on the right side.

^^^^The mirrors are way too high + the sconces are mounted too high. See if you can find a slim back plate for the sconces (or if you can return them - replace them with thinner sconces). I would also try to exchange the faucets for lower ones if possible.

I planned all of my mirror sizes/sconce placements/mounting heights on a piece of graph paper. It really helped to figure everything out.

What does the rest of your bathroom look like? The vanity is very pretty + I really like the flooring + the bathtub looks interesting. I have a feeling that it's a very nice bathroom. Post more photos please!!!

I would get either 1 big rectangle mirror, LED mirrors or double ones like these. Also the faucet needs to be lower than the mirror. I saw some really cool bathroom faucets on Amazon.

Did anyone else notice the space behind the tub in front of the window that the vanity is blocking acess to?

It is a stunning vanity and worth getting the scale of everything else right. You will feel so much better about this room once you do.

Move the outlet over, lower the mirrors to just above the backsplash. Once you do this you will need to judge whether the faucets feel too tall given how much of the mirror they will now be taking up.

Three sconces are crowded given the width of your vanity. Remove the middle one and lower them to about head height.

Get smaller scale sconces. Your vanity has excellent proportions and the size of your sconces in comparison to it look garish.

Get scones with a rectangular backplate: the swoop of your faucet and arch of your mirrors are circular enough for this area in your bathroom. A rectangular backsplash will balance it out and relate better to the vanity.

Be kind to yourself about the trial and error. Looks like you are renovating a bathroom while parenting an infant. Not easy. I'm excited to see the rest of your bathroom.

Yes, @Rho Dodendron, I'm curious about the tub and window placement too.

Am gonna suggest one mirror instead of the two. That might compliment the linear nature of the dresser vanity. It would certainly eliminate the third sconce. I don't think your mirrors need to be much taller than the person/people using them. To help eliminate the crowded feeling will also suggest that you eliminate the sconces altogether and replace with downlights in the ceiling.

I really like your vanity. Do you mind sharing what / where it’s from?

@kendra if you can believe it, it’s from Home Depot! It’s held up very well! The doors are not soft close though.

I think the problem here is that everything's trying to "be the star". You have no background players. And the countertop reads "cool", while the faucets are "warm"; they aren't friends.

    - Yes, I'd replace /simplify the mirror. Ideally one large mirror, which is more functional /gives you a better view of yourself.

    - The vanity is not particularly functional, as you have next-to-no counter space and not enough drawer space. It's all looks /no function.

    - Love the flooring.

Thank you guys so much for all the kind words. I hired an electrician today and he fixing the outlet, deleting the middle sconce and lowering the other two. I will lower the mirrors and am planning on replacing the sconces with something with a rectangular back plate, such as this. I will also replace the faucets for something with a lower profile, as I totally agree with the comments that they are too kitchen like— live and learn!

A lot of ^^^ $$$ for visible screws, and a DEDICATED led bulb.

I don't see recessed in the bath? You're eliminating the middle sconce? Watch the details of how much light you will get.

When the dedicated light goes? So too your light fixture. Might take eight years....who knows? I'm not a fan. Give me the one where you can change. replace a bulb. : )

When picking out new faucets get lever handles. So much easier to use and keep clean.

Select your sconce first THEN tell the electrician where to place it.

I have found Rejuvination lighting to feel like very light weight, cheap metal given the price. Not impressed.

Bri, I also was going to say what Beverly and Jan said.

    narrower mirrors would help.

    diff sconces (lowered to middle)

this one is similar to your proportions. (mirrors are a tad too narrow on this one. I'd forgo the middle light) but notice sconce placement

see if you like any of these

even this one with it's compact size looks better w/the over mirror lights

Hi Beth!! Thank you so much! If I keep the mirrors, I am thinking of removing the middle sconce and lowering them to the correct height (both the mirror and sconces). I’m drawn to the bar sconces in those photos and am seeing I have a lot of curves going on, so something with a rectangular back plate.
