Change the fireplace design, what do you think?

My current fireplace is the photo of the white stacked stone. I am considering removing the stone and having it finished in this dark, gray, micro cement. The floors will be a a shade darker than maple. The walls will be bone white, similar to what they are now.

    I like what you have.

    Thanks - appreciate your thoughts.

I like the cement look much better, but what does the rest of your home and furnishings look like? It a bold, somewhat industrial material to pull off in the average home.

    It's personal preference and $$$.

Depends the more industrial a look or organic you're after as the cement can go either way depending the surroundings.

What do the windows and the rest, look like? :)

I have always disliked stacked stone inside so I gwt it. I like the cement but it needs to work with your stuff I would however keep the floating hearth.

That picture doesn't look like micro-cement, which I have in multiple locations in my house (though not on my fireplace!). It looks like large porcelain tiles in a cement-style finish. I love m-c, but without seeing other pics of your house, it's hard to tell if it would be the right choice.

I like the inspiration photo you posted. Your fireplace proportions are a bit different. Do you plan to enlarge your fireplace opening or make your floating hearth chunkier/taller?

Hello, thank you all for the comments so far. This is the living room which is separate - meaning not open concept. New sliding glass doors are being installed on one wall. The other wall will have a mid century modern couch. The rest of the home is a bit contemporary with mid-century touches that I really enjoy.
BPMBA- I am meeting a micro cement professional next week. So apologies if the photo may not be micro cement - it was claimed to be though.
I do not plan to enlarge the opening but will most likely have some kind of door.

If that smooth look will make you happier, then go for it. The “superstacked” stone look is something that many people don’t like, so doing what works better with your decor is a great idea. Your MCM couch will look better with the seamless look.

I have a “stacked stone” fireplace but not to the ceiling. I softened the look of it by sponging some off white paint on the very dark stones. Mostly, I ignore it.

I would never replace that lovely stacked stone with ugly cement. Gray cement can look cool and industrial when shiny and new, but it doesn't take much to make it look brutal and cheap. And it's going to cost a lot of money to do it and it will probably be a minus when you go to sell.

No, no -- definite downgrade. Keep what you have.

Consider: The firebox needs a mantel. The mantel needs art. The shelves should be white. The bold art (I like, but find another spot for it) and replace with white shelves in line with the shelving left of the fireplace.

I don’t think you always need a mantle. It completely changed the look.

My first thought: why is there a small rectangular hole in the bottom of that wall? No mantel, fireplace screen, doors - just nothing at all. It doesn’t look like a fireplace to me. It just looks like a little hole, too small in relation to the wall to be a fireplace.

Is this an actual working FP???

I can see by the angle of the photo that the fireplace opening looks out of proportion. I have never felt it to be out of proportion and something I am not interested in changing at this point. Yes, the fireplace is working and I use it almost every morning in the winter months. I can see where a door be something I should consider. A mantel would definitely change the look. I consider my home contemporary with mid-century modern furniture that I really enjoy. I greatly appreciate all the feedback Everyone has given me.

Rich Danesi ….. I don’t think it needs a mantle but a glass

screen enclosure would be a plus ( has to open when lit ). pic of mine attached.

Thats a wonderful glass door. Do you recall where you purchased that? Thank you for your comment and sharing the photo.

It’s not necessary to actually enlarge the opening. It just needs some enhancements to give it more presence.

Rich…. That door was custom made, took the fabricator a long time to get the exact measurements, even a 1/4 “ or less is significant, due to variations, my home is an authentic MCM, so 60+ years old. Fireplace Dr.,Laguna Beach. Perhaps you have someone in your area. Ours was tricky, wraps around other side too.. Btw, I agree with Beverly , your fireplace stone doesn’t bother me, at least it’s not one with wide variations in color. I like your hearth & your art just where it is.

Thank you for the feedback and agree that the fireplace needs enhancements.

Here are ideas for a mantle with a smooth concrete fireplace.

You don't say what style the exterior ot the house is. So we have no idea if any of these styles are appropriate. Is the white stone original to the house?

I agree the flue opening is out of proportion, probably so in real life, and you might just be used to seeing it the way it is.

I would go with a matte black or dark charcoal fireplace to downplay the size of the opening. The stone might be interesting painted so I would try that first.

Maybe tile the hearth in matching porcelain tile.

I don't have software but here is a sketch:

What about sharing more pics? Head on, other views of room and insert?

I like cement and modernity, but feel that what you have is more striking and fits better with a genuine mid-century vibe. Not worth the fortune to change.

I am trying to figure out why this fireplace post is on the laundry forum.

I will take the blame for that since I posted.

Gemini did a pretty good job of creating the micro cement. After seeing this, I’ve decided to stick with the existing white stacked stone. Thank you all again for your input.

    The white is very nice.
