Bathroom remake

last month

I live in a 1920 bungalow and it is important to me to keep the existing features if posssible. My bathroom is small, with a full sized window above the tub. There is woodwork surrounding the window. I have a make shift shower in the basement, but as I age, I am now considering putting a shower in my bathroom. I

do not want to lose my window or the woodwork. Is there a solution?

You can have a window in your shower, however, you can't have that woodwork in a shower.

It is not a $ fix, but, trust me on this, spending money on a bathroom that is going to take you safely into aging, (I am there) is worth every penny. You want lighting, your want a seat, grab bars, you want easy clean.

If you don’t have a yard like above, where you need more privacy, do the window as suggested above, but maybe a

third of that size. Wood will never survive the water.

So true @djacob z6a SEWI, and the "chair rail" isn't 1920, so no loss there.

And Cathy, when you add a shower you will need a vent. As I mentioned this is not a $ fix.

Are you going to do a shower/tub combination OR just a shower?

    A shower/tub combination

You will need a complete gut job. It make no sense to have a shower to accommodate aging issues if you have to step over and into the tub. Can you show more photos of the space and a measured floor plan including closets, doorways as well as the window measurements, and adjoining rooms and closets. There might be other options if the big picture is available.

Have you checked out the step in tubs that can aslo have a shower . I still climb into my tub but getting out is tricky I have no grab bars but have got it figured out for now , Eventually I will need grab bars and maybe even a step in tub at some stage . The window for you is the issue but doable . Check with window makers in your area they will have a solution . The wood work unfortunately will need to be removed in the shower area for sure . I do not like showers so therei s one in our home but I never use it that might happen down the road .Your big ussue will be privacy if you want to keep that size and shape of window.

Have you considered replacing the clear glass with obscuring glass like reeded or wavy or even a window film that will give you privacy while preserving your light source?

There are shower rods out there that will allow you to have a vinyl shower curtain over the wood/window and still have a decorative shower curtain for the balance of the tub.

Have you considered adding a separate shower room with dressing area near your current bathroom?

We are in the process of changing shower/tub combos in the two very small bathrooms in our 1922 house to walk in showers for age in place safety. Our main floor bathroom looks identical to yours. Tubs are a huge safety issue as we age, so sad! Install grab bars, hand held shower. We’re opting to convert our window to a smaller high window, allowing room for a wall nook and grab bar. Sigh. Good luck, and bravo for planning ahead!
