Help Choosing a White Wall Color

last month
last modified: last month

Hello all-

I'm looking for a whole-house white wall paint that would potentially match a white/gray porcelain tile in most of the first floor and also some natural white oak wood flooring in other areas.

I realize it's all about looking at samples in real-world context, but any help that might point us to other alternatives would be greatly appreciated. We have gotten samples, both paint and stickies and tried to match but because our preferred lighting is yet to be installed, we've been a little bit stumped on what white wall paint colors to choose.

Some of the colors (all Sherwin Williams) we have looked at are White Sail, White Sand, Fleur de Sel, Reserved White, Spare White, and Drift of Mist.

I've included some photos and links to better images of the tile and wood flooring we are considering.

Thanks to all in advance!

can you post pictures in your home, showing what the lighting is like? also, what other elements in the room? will there be ANY color at all?

I used Simply White for my room, but I have some overall color to the room

    Thanks for the reply, @Beth H. :

Here are some photos of the house right before we purchased; then came a first floor plumbing flood, with all flooring and cabinets damaged.

The proposed tile is going in the living room and kitchen, the wood flooring in the green office and 2nd level landing (shown with carpeting).

We've yet to get any furniture, but we're looking at a couple of built-in bookcases in living room and new kitchen cabinets, both painted in a few different muted greens, from SW Cornwall Slate to SW Cast Iron as an accent wall in office, including maybe SW Sensible Hue in the kitchen. Hope this helps. Appreciate the input!

The lighting will play a big part. We recently did some work on a bathroom, and I did a lot of testing before choosing SW Pure White. It’s neutral…not too warm, not too stark.

Thanks @chispa ! We actually considered these two a while back and will probably revisit them soon, as we've got to get a move-on with the restoration.

are you saying you're getting new kitchen cabs?

If that is a fluorescent light, I'd strongly urge you to redo that. You don't have to do all recessed lighting, but you can remove that clunky box and do a nice fixture. since the rooms are being painted, now would be a good time to remove it.

try some samples AFTER you get the light redone (or at least switch the bulbs to an LED , 4000K temp. no cooler)

Chantilly Lace is a nice white for cabs. Super White is a cooler white. and Simply White falls into the neutral to warmer white tones (compared to the other two. on the wall it's still pretty white)

some soft grays that would look nice w/the counter and splash

I have BM Wrought Iron on my island, and Simply White. for the kitchen I used BM Light Pewter on the walls (I have marble on the island)

maybe for upstairs you could try something like this, BM Sea Salt and Simply White

Or this one shows BM Pale Oak and White Dove

Thanks @Patricia Colwell Consulting, after your suggestion, we are actually leaning towards doing this. I should have initially posted some lighter color while still offering some contrast with floors and ceilings. We looked at Vancouver Day and got a similar SW color in aloof Gray.
