is this rug big enough?

last month

I love the design and color in this rug. It’s perfect, but I’m afraid it’s too small. It’s 6 x 9. What do you guys think?

I would say yes it is too small have you tried turning it the other way and not have the chair sit on it at all if you really love the rug

No, I have not, but I will try. I wasn’t sure if all the furniture legs had to be on the rug.

    Better??

yes, better. Now move the white chair closer to the coffee table.

It looks as if you might be able to move the white chair to the end of the rug closer to the sofa, facing the sliding doors, and lose the footstool. I love your art and how you've hung it. Very nice!

Thank you! I will try moving the white chair so it’s facing the door wall and see if there’s room. 🤞

No, still too small. Return it while you can.

So this is a 9 x 6. Do you think an 8 x 10 would be big enough?

Looks like your tiles are 12x12, so easy enough to use some blue tape and mock up a larger rug, but it looks like 8x10 would work well.

I agree--8x10 is a good fit for most standard size seating areas. Although I had a 6x9 in a living room and none of the chair/sofa legs were on the rug. It was ok, but not the best. I replaced it with an 8x10, much better.

I find your rug too small and also think a more colourful one would be a better choice to coordinate with your decor.

It does look better turned, but you really need an 8x10.

Beverly, you always come through!!! love the taupe with the black abstract lines on it!!
Thanks, Lisa but it’s just a little bit too much color for me. It’s beautiful. It’s just I’m more comfortable with more neutral colors.
Thank- you for your input, Ladies!!!! I’m definitely returning this and getting an 8 x 10.

I too like the black spaghetti rug below. Very nice in your room.

The colorphobia on this site is how you say "je ne sais quoi"?

  • last month

I don’t know if it’s a phobia, I think it’s more what you’re comfortable with. Home is a place to relax and you want it to be beautiful. I am very comfortable with neutral colors. That’s what makes me feel good. 🩷🩷🩷

I understand, betsy, if neutrals are done well, and you're comfortable with them, they are a valid design choice. However, many homeowners on this site are afraid to commit to any color or pattern and use neutrals as a default. They think all neutrals go together, which is not true.

Here's a home where neutrals are done to perfection:

the 6x9 does feel a bit small,an 8x10 would work better and help anchor the space

You could have a similar look if you got a natural fiber rug, like jute, sisal, seagrass or abaca. They are inexpensive and add a lot of texture to a room. You could also add some green plants if you have enough light to grow them,

It appear too small to me in your photos. Do the rug store or online supplier have this rug in a bigger size?

Even an 8’ x 10’ may look like it’s barely meeting the minimum for area rug. I think you could go bigger if trying to warm up the look of tile floors. If you don’t really need the rug for a warmer look or more comfort for you feet, try without for a while. Regardless, get out the blue painters tape and map out different sizes on the floor. I have tried measuring in anywhere from 12” - 18” from walls and walkways defining the parameters of the room. I have beautiful hardwood floors and am thinking about no rug in the future, maybe try in the summer and see how it goes.
