need advice for fireplace tiles

last month

I am having my wood floors redone, and going with a lighter look than current (toning down the yellows).

I also want to replace the tiles around my fireplace. I’m leaning towards granite or quartz. I’m looking for any advice to help me make a good decision that will elevate this room. Don’t mind the doggie…

The color of your new floors need to be considered when selecting your new surround.

Quartz is 37% resin. Not a good surround. Quartzite could work.

Show us the rest of the room so we can get an idea of how this fireplace fits into the whole.

What is the overall style of the house? In my previous house I used Pratt & Larson hand-made Spanish inspired tiles, because the house was Spanish style. You only need a few tiles, so you can splurge on something hand-made or more unique.

I suggest you wait till the floors are done to chose the finishes for your fireplace. Post another picture when the floors are done along with pictures of the entire room so we can see the decor/colour scheme of the room.

Yes, chispa’s suggestion excellent , I meant to mention Pratt & Larson, just type in “fireplace” in the search area.

It's hard to elevate the look of a room with a massive black TV screen that is out of proportion to the fireplace. Is there no other wall where you could put that huge screen? It hurts my neck to look at it. Sometimes upgrades can be fixed with new layouts the homeowner hasn't considered. You need to show the rest of the room to get the best suggestions because everything needs to connect.

Here's an elevated room with a big TV.

The tiles harmonize well with the current floor. Are you still going for light gold wood floors? Then current tiles are fine.

You're not showing us room, furnishings, etc. to see how art, rugs, furnishings relate. Sometimes a change in wall color can elevate a room.

I do not see the yellow in the floor so my advice wait until the floors are done then you will have abtter idea what works with the new floor color. For me the little bookshelves are unattractive and The TV is overppowering the tile looks fine . Is tah agas FP ? Do you need the tile on thee floor ? Where I live gas FPs do not need a hearth . I think making this decision with Christmas stuff all over is the wrong time .Love the doggie I aslo agree we need to see the whole space If you are thinking about a change in the book cases my advice is remove them and mmake sure the flooring goes there too

Choosing the right fireplace tile comes down to scale, texture, and how well it complements the surrounding finishes. Larger format tiles tend to create a cleaner, more contemporary look with fewer grout lines, while textured or patterned tiles can add visual interest and make the fireplace a focal point. The finish, matte, honed, or polished, should align with the overall mood of the room, whether cozy or dramatic. Color selection works best when it either subtly contrasts with the walls or ties into existing materials like flooring or cabinetry. Thoughtful grout selection and clean transitions to adjacent surfaces ensure the fireplace feels integrated rather than visually disconnected from the rest of the space.

Are you replacing the hearth as well? Would certainly suggest that the hearth and surround match. I'm thinking natural slate would be a good material.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and suggestions, it’s all really helpful. The work on the wood floors will start early jan. I’ll wait until later in January and repost pics of the entire room. Appreciate you all, happy holidays.

In the meantime, you could decide if you’d like a hearth or not.

Consider the room and its decor to help narrow down choices. If keeping tv there, a black surround/insert may help offset its prominence.

Take a look on line for inspiration and save your favourites and since you are redoing floors, consider more substantial shelving to create a more balanced feel.
