What's there now and how uneven is it. Carpet squares in commercial grade can be very flexible, dense and low pile.

Lvp and laminate will fail if you don't even out the floor surface.

Wood. Has flex and probably what was originally used in 1936.

• What is the cottage used for ? storage? guest house/room? It’s purpose would influence my choice. Yes, carpet files ( like Flor ) might work as well as LVT, cork, sheet vinyl, wood, etc etc.

I think you need to make sure the base is level and solid no flooring by itself will do thta even wood planks

I do think we need a bit of info as to what youmean when you say uneven . Maybe some pics too. Is this on a foundation often little cottages were built on the ground no foundation really .

I would try and level the floor and repair the subfloor and then put down the flooring I wanted. In a little cottage tust would likely be hardwood or LVP depending on a few o RT RT rectors like proximity to water and durability

Leveling and repairing the subfloor is a very good idea if the floor is wood framed. If the floor is an uneven concrete slab you can still pour a topping to level the slab out.

Good old fashioned sheet vinyl! I have a wonky floor and I have a mix of carpet and sheet vinyl. Love it!

None of any of this will work unless it is flat, structurally sound, and climate controlled. Only exterior grade carpet will work for non flat, bouncy and unsupported, and subject to below freezing and summer heat.
