Don't waste your money. 99% of the images one sees online of "colored" or "multicolored" hostas are AI generated and are not real. The seeds are sold by Asian vendors typically (or on Etsy) and if they are even hosta seeds to begin with (often doubtful), they will not produce multicolored plants in a rainbow of colors.. While hostas can be very colorful, they will always be in various shades and combinations of greens, cream, white, gold and bluish green. But no red, orange or purple.

I once fell victim to this type of scam ordering some seeds supposedly of some fancy very dark coloured Bleeding Heart from a NA source. First off, none germinated, secondly I couldn't find any reference anywhere with respect to these funky colours they were promoting, none of the reference sources showed anything remotely like the colours being shown. Buyer beware, if it sounds too good it likely is too good to be true. Yes, you see all those fancy coloured hosta seeds being promoted on Amazon, Walmart, Etsy etc and bringing the vendors to the attention of the site operators has little effect seeing they'll just pop-up under a different ID.

It's relatively easy to propagate hostas and much harder to breed seeds to be true to a cultivar. So, if you don't see the hostas for sale at nurseries, it's almost certainly a scam. I've never seen hostas and I tend to read gardening magazines, which tend to have articles like, "new and exciting plants for 2026 (20, 21, 22, 23, etc). I find it hard to believe seeds are offered if the plants aren't.

There was a big hoo-ha online about this topic 12-18 months back or so.....when ads for these multicolored (or strangely colored) plants were popping up a lot. Rainbow colored chrysanthemums, sky blue Japanese maples, multicolored hostas, blue tomatoes, rainbow colored palm trees, etc. Seeds for plants in colors not found in nature!!

The previous advice is sound. If you have never seen the plant itself for sale in any reliable nursery or nursery catalogue, then chances are very good it doesn't actually exist.
